Welcome to the Art I class at Heritage High School. As you child’s instructor, you need to know that I am a highly qualified art teacher and a professional artist. Please know that I am thrilled to welcome students to my art classroom. Art projects will be based on the National and Tennessee Standards of the Visual Arts for high school. This course is offered to students needing a fine arts credit or those interested in art in general. On block scheduling one full credit is earned for this semester class. All art students are asked to pay the suggested thirty dollars for art materials used in art making projects; however, the actual cost is closer to forty-five dollars. Therefore, students will be asked to participate in a fundraiser to help provide additional materials needed for the art program. These are our only sources of funding for the visual arts programming. Students will use an art textbook in combination with studio work, art history notebook, and relevant handouts. The purpose of this course is to expose art students to art appreciation, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage, and crafting. With the variety of media explored students will develop a personal style, learning design skills, and language of art, and practice problem- solving. Art history is a major component of the visual arts standards; therefore students will be required to complete a research paper/report. Art history will be included in power point lectures, art journal/notebooks, as well as sketches/drawings.
All Art 1 students shall receive a grade in the following ways: note: (different grades are based on a weighted scale)
A. Studio art (projects) 50%
B. Art history /Art Notebook 10%
C. Art History Research Paper 10%
D. Work Ethic and class participation 10%
E. Semester Exam 20%
Supplies: Students will need the following supplies daily for class
1. Notebook Paper
2. Pen and #2 wooden pencils daily (all other materials are provided)
3. One inch 3 ring binder (required to keep in classroom for the semester)
4. 15 Dividers for the binder/notebook
Note: This is primarily a studio class. All studio art work will be done in class. No studio homework can be assigned for makeup at home. Students can however, make up art work during the early extended studio hours or a scheduled after school appointment with the instructor. Excessive absences (Doctors, excused or unexcused) if not made up can lead to a lower or a failing grade). Early Extended Studio Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. or 3:30m to 4:30 by appointment only.
Project grades are given when projects are completed. Some projects will take one week to complete and others will take two weeks. Each project is different.
Art 1 explores and gives experience in two-dimensional (drawing and painting), three-dimensional (sculpture, ceramics) formats, integrates art history, design principles, aesthetic criticism and analysis. Art 1 students are required to keep an art history notebook. The student is introduced to artists and is given information about them through lecture, handouts, text book, and power point presentations. Artist vocabulary will be included in the art history notebook. A semester exam will be given on the material studied. This along with the studio art projects as well as with good classroom work ethic/participation will become the basis for the art grade each term. The student needs to remember that the final grade is a weighted one and is not an average of the individual grades earned.
By taking the Art 1 course, students will gain:
A. A general building of art concepts necessary for a general and broad understanding of art, its purpose, and its relation to other academic subjects.
B. A better understanding of the Elements of Art: Line, Color, Form, Shape, Texture, Value, Space
C. A better understanding of the Principles of Design: Balance, Unity, Contrast, Emphasis, Pattern, Movement, Rhythm
D. A general history of artist and art concepts.
E. A better understanding of art as a problem-solving and creative process for all students.
F. An understanding of art and design with use of materials and tools to create the art pieces (assignments will be given either by lecture, project assignments, examples, or a combination of these). Students are expected to take care of all equipment and to clean up after themselves. Inappropriate behavior or mishandling of art supplies will not be tolerated. Art students are expected at all times to conduct themselves in a proper and safe manner. All assignments must be turned in on time to receive full credit.

Notebook grade: routinely the notebook will be graded and therefore must be in order at all times. The grade will be based on organization, neatness and completion of assignments.
Make-up work: Students will be given one week to make up work after an absence. Studio assignments must be made up before or after school. Students are responsible for getting the missed assignments or notes.
Semester exam: count for 20% of the semester grade/Test will cover both 9week terms. It includes vocabulary, art history, sketches/drawing, any information in the notebook and drawing techniques learned during the semester. Information placed in the art notebook will help students study for the exam.
Classroom climate: Students are expected to be in the classroom on time with their art notebook, pencil and paper. The school rules and classroom rules will be observed in the classroom at all times. Students will show respect for themselves and others by listening when someone else is speaking and by waiting patiently to respond. Students will be responsible for assignments and projects when given and must turn them in on the due date. Students are responsible for keeping the art room clean and neat.
I love teaching art. My goal is for everyone to find something inspiring, interesting, fun, or discover something new in art this semester. I look forward to learning from and being inspired by you, too.
