The aim of this 12th grade IB English course is to encourage a personal appreciation of literature and develop an understanding of the techniques involved in literary criticism, develop powers of expression to a range of literary works, and to broaden the perspective through study and close analysis of the written text.

Students will be taking the PLAN test during class tomorrow. This is a school-wide test.

Students completed the end of the week Vocabualry QUIZ.

We also finished viewing Julius Caesar with video questions.

Students should be prepared for a video QUIZ on Monday.

Due Date: September 15, 2009
Today students were introduced to a new set of vocabulary.

We also read Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death." Students practiced active reading strategies while reading in small groups or independently.

We will begin our unit on Julius Caesar at our next class.

Due Date: September 10, 2009
Students should come to class prepared to discuss "Lamb to the Slaughter." We will also read the short story "The Masque of the Red Death" by Poe.

Students review Vocabulary.

Students read "By the Waters of Babylon" by Stephen Vincent Benet, pages 174-186 of text.

Students take QUIZ on weekly vocabulary.

Students read Saki's short story "The Storyteller" pages 188-193 in text. Students complete a summary of the frame story. See attached.

Students read Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" pages 103-109 in text. Focus is on character.

Students will complete a quick vocabualry practice.

Students will discuss "The Leap" and the role blindness plays. What can the mother's narrator "see" as a result of her blindness? What can't she see as a result of her blindness? Is it significant in the story?

Students will read Bradbury's "The Pedestrian" and compare and contrast the short story with Fahrenheit 451.

Students will practice Week 2 of vocabulary.

Students read the short story "The Leap" by Louise Erdrich. Students will complete a set of analysis questions and a short essay. Please see attached.

Today students completed the Gateway Pretest to assess individual levels.

We will pick back up with the poem lit crit on Tuesday as well as begin SSR and the Short Story Unit. Be ready!!!
