Grade 1
First-grade students visited the libray for weekly story times and class checkout September 21-October 16 . During those sessions, they reviewed parts of a book, parts of a title page, characteristics of fiction, alphabetical arrangement of fiction by the author's last name, characteristics of nonfiction, and numerical arrangement of nonfiction by subject.

On October 19, students began open library hours. They may now visit the library at any time in small groups or with their classes for checkout or research. Classes are also scheduled throughout the year. In December, students were scheduled for lessons on appropriate sources to use for their animal research projects (dictionary, encyclopedia, nonfiction books). In January, classes returned for a story time with Virginia Readers' Choice books. During this lesson, they were also introduced to a new section in the library...the Easy Reader Section. First-graders may now check out beginning readers and chapter books from that section.

First graders may check out one book at a time for one week. The book must be returned before checking out another book. Books may be renewed for an additional week.

Book talks and instructional classes are scheduled throughout the year. Students came to the library the week of October 19 to learn about the fiction section in the library, and they began checking out chapter books from this section the following week. Classes returned in January for instruction in using word reference tools (table of contents, glossary, index) and in checking out books from the Nonfiction and Biography sections of the library. In January, students were also scheduled for Virginia Readers' Choice book talks. Students will return in May for introductory lessons on using the electronic library catalog, as well as instruction in using a dictionary and encyclopedia.
