After reading the below, please read this! Each quarter, ClassJump must raise exactly $1,950 to pay for the cost of the server that everyone here uses. Our upcoming quarter ends on November 15th. That's when the bill for our wonderful server will land on my desk and stare up at me.
As of this writing, ClassJump has received $655 since our last successful quarterly fund raiser. Math was never my personal strong suit, but simple subtraction was never much of a problem. We're currently short $1,295 and have less than 30 days to satisfy our cold and insistent financial obligations.
We require support to keep this here for you.
ClassJump has no paid staff. As the Executive Director of the 501(3)(c) that is ClassJump. Inc, I have never received a single pay check and I have no intentions of ever doing so.
ClassJump operates on a few simple ideals
- Provide web sites to teachers no matter where they are or what type of school they work for
- Never place advertising in front of children
- Never share anyone's personal information for any reason
- Do the right things for the right reasons
Providing a web server as large and robust at ClassJump is not free
The server that ClassJump is on is in a large, air-conditioned data center. The amount of data that we transfer on any given day is often staggering. Transferring data, like transferring a ton of freight by land and sea, does not come cheap.
There are over 33,000 teachers here.
The annual cost of keeping ClassJump here is $7,800
$7,800 divided by 33,000 is around 25 ¢ per teacher, per year
If ClassJump is worth 25 ¢ a year to you, now is the time to say so
If we are not supported, we're gone. It's as simple as that.
About that last sentence. Back in High School, my favorite English teacher remarked that I was a bit too blunt. She wanted me to try my best to 'soften the edges' of my papers, to guide the reader more gently to conclusions, rather than dropping the facts on them one on top of another. Like the advanced math lessons I struggled with, I guess I never got very good at literary subtlety either. Sorry, Mrs. Ransmier!

I have mailed a $100 donation this past week (Oct. 15-19). You should have received it by now.
ClassJump Reply to Carolyn Williams:
Carolyn! Your generous donation was received today. That's amazing! I also enjoyed your kind letter so much.
I hope you do not mind me quoting from it below.
'I have looked at other teacher websites and those websites just do not come close to offering what you have made available for use through your well thought-out site design. Thank you so much for helping me to make a big difference in my students' academic learning for the 21st century.'

Thank you for the clear explanation of Class Jump, Inc's financial backing. My son is involved in a 501(3)(c)and he also works tirelessly without pay. I will make my financial contribution ASAP - I'm living on fumes the remainder of this month with my ESL teacher's salary!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Alex Witkowski October 22, 2012
Just submit my donation! I'm just starting to explore the site's capabilities, but I'm thrilled with what I've seen so far!
Mrs. Foley October 22, 2012
I mailed a check out a few days ago. I will try to send more in the upcoming months. I love the ease of use on this site! Thank you.
ClassJump Reply to Mrs. Foley:
Mrs. Foley! Your contribution was received in the mail today! Thank you so much for your appreciation of what ClassJump offers! It's also such a pleasure to see a hand written envelope in the mail!

Justin Deerwester October 22, 2012
I've donated in the past, and think it is worth it. It would be a shame to see classjump go away with all the good it does. Before taking such a drastic step, could you think about offering it as a pay site if we do not meet the goal. I would pay $30 a year for this great service like I'm sure others would. Then it could be your choice what you do with the funds.
ClassJump Reply to Justin Deerwester:
In less than 24 hours after I posted this article, ClassJump teachers and friends have sent in $475! It's so rewarding to know that the service is appreciated.
Mr. Deerwester's idea that a subscription fee be charged is not a new one and it's not a bad one either. It's just a different model, a different way to operate.
I prefer the non-profit model because it places constraints on what the mission of the corporation can be, without those constraints having to be written explicitly into the by-laws of the corporation. For example, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity may not attempt to influence legislation as part of its activities and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates. What that means to me is that we're here for the benefit of everyone, regardless of where you sit in the political arena.
Additionally, no part of a section 501(c)(3) organization's net earnings may inure to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual. What that means to me is that ClassJump will never take more than exactly what it needs to serve teachers, students and parents. I like that because it feels right.
As of this rather long-winded comment, only $820 to go for this fundraiser. We'll get there!

I've sent my check about a month ago, doubling your suggested amount each semester. I don't think I could survive without your site.
ClassJump Reply to Chris Putman, Assistant Professor of Media:
Chris, thanks so very much. Your check was received. It's so gratifying to know that what is offered here is supported with such generosity.
Do you realize that between the time I posted the article yesterday and the time at which I'm replying to your comment that ClassJump has raised $840.00!!!!

I wish I could have done more, but more than happy to help this site. It's a lifesaver for me.
June Kendall October 25, 2012
This site is a time saver, and easy to use! I will send what I can once I get paid at the end of the month - otherwise it would have to literally only be 25 cents!
Jared Henry October 25, 2012
I love this sight
Michelle Bolt October 26, 2012
This is a very uselful site - it makes keeping in touch with my students a breeze. I'd also gladly pay about $30.00 a year to maintain - that may be a thought if enough donations do not come in.
JoAnn Frados October 26, 2012
WHAT A GOD SEND - after years of trying other sites - this one is dummy proof and nontechie friendly.
Ms. DiMatteo October 28, 2012
This site is absolutley wonderful, user friendly and FREE ?!! We get paid in a few days and I will send in as much as I can. I have been out ill with breast cancer for the past two years and classjump was my only communication tool with my students. I am so grateful to you for this GREAT way to keep in touch with all of my families.
Thank you again!
Thank you again!
Elaine Brewer October 29, 2012
I aoppreciate the service and so do my students. I read them your email today and we (as a math class) talked about about funding and how this service could be lost if you do not have the funds. THEY took up a collection to mail with mine!!! Look for our check soon...
Luesa Estrada October 29, 2012
I have to wait until the next pay period but I will be sending in what I can which I am sure could be applied to the next quarter. I love this site and so do my students. I also agree with Michelle Bolt. $30.00 a year isn't unreasonable for the service. Thank you! :-)
Jason Reddy October 29, 2012
User friendly and clean! Might be nice to change the background according to month or season??
Garret Sokoloff October 31, 2012
I will have to make a contribution.
I am using Classjump right now to stay in touch with students during the period that schools are closed in New York City because of Hurricane Sandy.
Thank you.

I have sent money via the website in the past, but this time I noticed that others have mailed you checks which I would prefer to do. Please send me the address to which I should mail my contribution.
Thanks for making this site available to us! My students, their parents, and I are all very appreciative.

I contributed $20. I wish I could contribute more, but we are on a very tight budget at home.
Your website is wonderful. My kids are able to communicate with me and I with them - especially when they have homework questions.
I will contribute more as soon as I can - I really mean that - not just saying words. Your sight is a god send for us teachers.
Suggestions: perhaps we could ALL contribute a fixed amount per year? That would be the fair thing to do.

The site is great it has provided needed technology to move our students forward
Mrs. Monsebroten November 8, 2012
The students find it an easy way to check on homework and assignments and to keep up to date. And it is nice that parents can also check this.
prof bolet January 31, 2013
I simply want to express my gratitude towards this wonderful website; truly invaluable, it is.
