English 9
English 9 will stress a basic background in the structure of short stories, novels, poetry, drama, and essays. Emphasis will also be put on the mechanics of writing and vocabulary. Some creative writing will be explored in personal journals and independent writing projects. The eight parts of speech will be reviewed, and phrases will be introduced.
Honors English 9
Honors English 9 is a one-year accelerated course which covers genres such as the short story, the novel, poetry, and drama. Creativity, writing structure, analysis of literature and writing, and speaking skills are also emphasized throughout the year. In addition to topics covered in English 9, honors students will also be assigned additional readings and written work.
Literature in Drama
One of the oldest forms of literature is drama. Beginning in ancient Greece, drama has progressed to the modern form seen today. This class will explore this evolution through dramas from authors such as Edmond Rostand to the modern drama of Arthur Miller. This class will also study and explore the literary elements of drama. Students will read four to five full-length plays and will select and perform a short scene.
Speech
This is a senior elective English course which consists of the basics of public speaking. Students will learn how to select a speech topic, gather information, organize ideas and use supporting evidence. A variety of speeches, including a speech to inform, a speech to persuade, a speech to entertain, a speech for a special occasion, etc., will give students an opportunity to analyze themselves as speakers and to adapt their speaking styles and content for various audiences.
