Power-point from the presentation on Building a Spiritual Family is posted on the link below.
Brain Teasers
English

Grammar is a necessary component of Language Arts. Correct usage, literary devices, parts of speech, writing, thinking, speaking, communication will be part of this class. The English classes will support the grammar.

What is important?

In the Language Arts class I will attempt to review all areas of LA....
VOCABULARY

The vocabulary book is divided into lessons. There is a homework calendar for english and vocabulary (click under the 'Homework Reminders' category and the links are there with full calendars.)

I told the students that it is important to look at the following areas in the vocabulary Text:
1. Definitions

2. Language origin (Latin, Greek, German, Old English, etc..)
3. Parts of Speech: is the word a noun, verb, adjective, adverb????? What are the variations listed?
4. Can the student use the word comfortably in writing?
It is my hope that students will gain a fluency in language use.
Listening

Students will listen to a selection for listening pleasure. They will be quizzed on what is heard. Note-taking will be covered in the library classes. IBM spends millions on their employees in this particular area.

Writing
The students received a WRITING FOLDER that has support materials in helping the students to advance in writing skills. I will model and use this with the students so they see the joys of having this resource. I believe it is paramount to clear communication that students have an 'assistant' that helps them. This is the purpose served by the writing folder.

Speaking
This trimested the students will not only write but deliver speeches. Speaking in front of others is an acquired skill which supports the child. Building self-confidence through public speaking is not only fun but will assist the student to gain leadership qualities.

Evaluating

Evaluating a piece of literature or another person's point of view will broaden thinking and captures the essence of qualities needed now and in the future. I hope that supporting this skill leads a student toward clear thinking and decision making.

Creating
Students will create art work, speeches, projects, and more. Synthesizing what they know and creating something new supports the future leader.

THINKING
Each day we will try and tackle some mind benders, mysteries, or some thought-provoking situation. I am a fan of Benjamin Bloom and his taxonomy of thinking. Edward de Bono is another educator who has influenced my instruction.

I hope that the students will enjoy learning as much as I enjoy teaching.

Thank you for your support as we prepare your children for high school.

December 2011: We are preparing a field trip to the EMMITSBURG SENIOR CENTER so that we can sing to the seniors......a gift for our ADVENT OUTREACH. We are also preparing a spiritual program of Christmas around the world. This will be held on Dec. 22nd. Grade 8 is preparing for the country of KENYA. All are welcome:)

The Marks of the Church are the topic for December. Religion, a vital class at MSS, allows the students to pray every day. In the Religion class we will pray, learn Christian doctrine according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Loyola textbook includes a variety of church doctrine. It includes: 1) Catholic, Christian Conscience Formation 2) The Role of Blessed Mother in our lives 3) How salvation history brings us Jesus Christ: Scripture Study 4) Church History 5) Sacraments 6) Role of the Holy Spirit 7) Bible experiences 8) The Pope, Saints and Doctors of the Church We will focus on how to make a decision with conscience formation, use of Scripture and church doctrines. Classes include a time for prayer, direct instructions, note-taking, projects, speeches, discussion, writing in a reflective manner and art/music.

Chapter 1: A Community of Disciples The students explore the Church as a mystery. They reflect on the biblical images of the Church and determine whether the spiritual truths the images represent are evident in their own lives. They come to see Mary as the best image of the Church, and the Spirit as the sanctifier. They review keeping a reflection notebook.

Chapter 2: Tracing Our Roots The students gain an overview of salvation history. They come to understand Scripture and Tradition as expressions of God's Revelation in Jesus Christ. They study the people who belong to the Church and the duties of the members.

Chapter 3: A Closer Look The students learn about the origins of the Church and its early stages. They become acquainted with the six models of the Church proposed by theologian Avery Dulles.

Chapter 4: A People of Prayer The students reflect on the importance of prayer, what it is, its purposes, and various types of prayer. They review how Jesus prayed and what he taught about prayer. They explore various times and places for prayer. They are introduced to the Liturgy of the Hours, the prayer of Christians.

Chapter 5: A People of Service The students learn that every Christian is called to share in the mission of Christ and his Church. They also study the Beatitudes and Corporal Works of Mercy and consider ways to apply them to their lives. I feel that it is paramount to this class that Catholic Church Teachings are shared. We will learn the more significant parts of the Catholic faith.

Chapter 6: An understanding of charity verses justice and systemic change will be stressed. Catholic Social Teachings are paramount to this class. We will cover Chapters 7 & 8.....focusing on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Catholic Church as universal. Special attention will be paid to background of the Holy Land and New Testament characters.

Chapter 8-9:One speech and project this month. (see Homework Reminders for the project details) Unit 3: The History of the Church: * The students will be able to identify key people and events in the Church's history.

Chapter 10: The First Years The students learn how the Holy Spirit guided the Christians of the first century as the Church took shape and spread the Good News. They study the contributions of Peter, Paul, and Stephen, and other early Christians. They are encouraged to be witnesses today.

Chapter 11: The Church Grows The students focus on the story of Saul's conversion and how he, along with Peter, brought the Gospel to the Gentiles. The Council of Jerusalem is explored as a turning point in the Church's mission to bring the Gospel to all nations.

Chapter 12: A House Built on Rock The students consider the Roman persecutions that threatened to eliminate the Church and the heresy that divided it. They find inspiration in the actions of the martyrs and defenders of the faith. They learn about the Church Fathers and the monks, and they are challenged to increase their trust in God's love for them. Students will be active, reflective, and have readings, prayer, discussion and presentations.

FAMILY LIFE The family life program is generally in the third trimester during May. Link to our Motherhouse in Paris: http://www.filles-de-la-charite.org/en/
