Essay (homework)
Due Date: November 23, 2009
You must prepare to write an in-class, 5-paragraph, persuasive essay to answer the following question:
"Was slavery the only motivating factor behind the secession of the South?"

To answer this question, you must consider the events that lead up to the secession of South Carolina and other Southern states in 1860-1861. This will be your evidence supporting your thesis, whichever way you decide to argue. You may use your notes, the textbook, and outside sources as your evidence. You must cite all of your sources within your essay which you will be writing in class.

To prepare for this final assessment, take the time to organize your thoughts about the question. Utilize the "Persuasive Essay Organizer" that was distributed during class. You may use this and your notes to write your essay in 45 minutes. Time management is important so it is critical that you are prepared to write when you sit down!
