November
updated October 23, 2009
We will study about maps and globes this month in Cultural Studies.
Happy November! The students in 5P are improving each day and learning lots of new skills and information. In the month of November, we will focus on the following topics in each subject:

Mathematics: We will continue to explore numbers 0-5 in both numeral and word form, in addition to using ordinal numbers to the fifth. Students will sequence the numbers 0-5 and represent these quantities in a variety of ways. Students will continue to recognize groups with more, fewer, and equal numbers of objects, as well as solving basic verbal word problems. We will also celebrate the 50th day of school!

Cultural Studies: The red bats will begin their study on maps and globes. We will discuss how maps are concrete representations of places. The students will create their own world map, as well as maps of their classroom and maps of their bedrooms. We will also play games using world maps and read books about different continents, countries, and oceans.

Reading and Language Arts: In November we will concentrate on the letters G, L, and D. Our November sight words are: and, can, it, me. In our language arts class we will work on nursery rhymes. Students will get to sing and read familiar nursery rhymes. We will discuss and write rhyming words. We will also rewrite a nursery rhyme as a class project. During reading time we will focus on asking questions. Students will respond to questions using illustrations from the text. They will also read their own writing to the teacher or a peer. During guided reading time, students will focus on using 1:1 correspondence and making sense of what they read.

Some students at school as sponsoring an initiative called “Operation Kozak’s Caring.” This is a drive for children in need for the upcoming holiday season. The students sponsoring this drive are asking other students and their families to participate by taking a box out of the closet and fill it to the brim with things that would make kids (ages 8-16) happy. They suggest small toys, candy, batteries, inexpensive technology, toiletries, socks, underwear, cards, school supplies and whatever else you can think of. They will place a first priority on delivering the boxes to the orphanages that have traditionally received our support through the humanitarian clubs. If you would like to participate, simply fill a box full of the above-mentioned items and send it to school with your child. A big thank you for your generosity!

Thanks and have a great month!
