History of oceans trading cards (homework)
Due Date: September 7, 2012
Create 5 trading cards for famous oceanographers. They can be past or present. They should be on a 3x5 index card and should include a small picture if you can find one. It should include a short listed biography of major accomplishments and contributions. You can make them like baseball cards with stats and averages, or Pokemon cards with HP points and moves or any other type of collectible card you would like. Have fun.

On 10/24 you will have control of the Project O research vessel. You can design a study that leads toward completing your year-long research or a one time study. The forms below should help you prepare for the trip. We will discuss this over the next couple weeks, but you should start to think about what you would like to study.

Summer reading assignment (homework)

You need to write one page about your summer reading. You should include 1-3 paragraphs on how the book relates to marine science, 1 paragraph about how the book relates to your own life experiences or future plans and 1 paragraph summarizing the book and including your reccomendations. These should be sent electronicallty and will be posted on the site for other students to see.
Go to these sites to read about the techniques we will be using. You must decide whether you will be streak plating a sample or pouring and spreading the bacteria. You may want to start some background research on the organisms you want to use for the lab. You will eventually write a lab report on the activity.

Honors - choose an organism from the attached file to research. You should be looking for biomedical applications of compounds from these organisms as well as general info about these organisms. We will write a full standard lab report for this lab. You should include a survey of any current studies of this animal or its taxonomic group as well as a section on bioprospecting the sea.

1. A detailed description of what the local issue is, what you plan to do about it and when. This should be detailed enough to build your final paper from and descriptive enough that I can understand what you are doing and make constructive comments about what you plan to do
2. A list of contacts willing to work with you on the project and a summary the connection they have to the issue.
3. A proposal for how you will present the information and to whom you will present it (Board of Ed. presentation, Water Pollution Control Authority meeting, video presentation etc....)
