6th Grade Mathematics Syllabus: 2009-2010

Materials:
Bring your 3 ring binder, 2 pencils, lined paper, erasers, highlighters, and a colored pen everyday. *Note* this year Horace Mann Middle School will supply all of our students with a 3 ring binder. Students are responsible for bringing their binders to school everyday and keeping them looking professional. This means binders are for school purposes only. No writing or drawing on the cover or inside the binders. This is a school policy that will be enforced.
Class Expectations:
Students
1. Students are expected to actively participate in their learning. This means that students are to complete all class assignments, work diligently, and try their best at all times.
2. Students are expected to follow all classroom rules and procedures.
3. Students are expected to complete all homework.
Parents
1. Please provide a quiet place for your child to complete homework.
2. Please return items that require your signature by the due date.
3. Please ensure that your child completes his/her homework.
4. Please contact me via Email if you have concerns or questions.
Teacher
1. Provide challenging and engaging lessons that follow the California State Standards.
2. Enforce classroom rules.
3. Communicate with parents and students regarding student progress.
4. Listen to students and help them reach their goals.
Grades:
Grades are based on class work (including warm-ups, notes, and class activities), class participation, homework, tests, and projects.

80-89% B
70-79% C
60-69% D
Below 60 F
Criteria for Grading
Homework/Class work 50%
Tests/Quizzes/ Projects 40%
Student participation 10%
Homework:
1. Homework is assigned most days.
2. Late homework will be accepted but to help student learn it is expected to be on time.
3. In addition any class work, most quizzes and some tests can be resubmitted with corrections for a higher grade.
Code of Conduct:
1. Be on time and be prepared to work when the bell rings (Bring materials to class, sharpen pencils before class starts).
2. Follow instructions the first time they are given.
3. Raise your hand to speak or get out of your seat.
4. No food, drinks or GUM, electronic devices, or use of cosmetics in class.
5. All Math work must be done in pencil-no pens.
6. Respect yourself, the teacher, each other and our classroom.
7. Take care of your personal business before school and at lunch (Using restroom, socializing, etc.).
8. Any rules mandated by the school will also be enforced.
Consequences for Unacceptable Behavior:
1. Verbal warning to student
2. Student will receive detention for 10 minutes at lunch.
3. Student will 30 minutes at lunch and parent contact.
4. Conference between parent, teacher, student, and counselor. Also possible suspension.
5. In addition any missing work/homework will be completed at lunch
Class Work, Homework & Extra Credit: Most assigned work is classwork. Homework will be assigned at each teacher's discretion and it will be due on the designated day (usually the next day). Extra Credit is NOT assigned and is given at each teacher's request.
Absences: All missed work (class work, homework, quizzes & tests) as a result of an excused absence MUST be made up ASAP. It is the STUDENT's responsibility for acquiring, completing and turning in missed work.
Bathroom Visits: Students are NOT granted a bathroom pass unless it's an extreme emergency.
Opportunities for additional support:
Students can see me before or after school for extra help. I encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity for success.
