Welcome. This is a continuation of a year long course is designed to develop a strong foundation in biology while fostering science literacy through inquiry, critical thinking.

Plant Test Friday-Do Practice Questions (homework)

Today- you and your peers presented plant presentations to fill in plant sheet. Notes also were GIVEN to you. USE THEM. Please answer practice questions (use your book too). These are due FRIDAY.
PLANTS-TEST FRIDAY
April 21, 2008
WELCOME BACK. Today we finished up assigned plant presentations. Tomorrow-your team needs to be ready to teach the class about your topic. Today you were given an outline for plants. Wed. we will do a flower dissesction and review. Friday-Test. We will continue plants next week, focusing on photosynthesis, plant cells (making paper) and transpiration.
Finish summaries/Finish Directed Reading Pkt. 32-3 (homework)

Wed. We began to look at the most current model of how humans moved out of Africa and around the Globe with a Nova video entitled Origins. I also introduced the idea of endosymbios-a theory proposed in the 1880's and then supported further by the work of Lynn Marguilis in the 1970's. With the "biotech revolution" this idea has been further supported by a large amount of DNA evidence. It's basic premise is that the organelles used by eukaryotic organisms to make energy (the mitochondria) and by plants to do photosynthesis (choloroplasts) had their earliest origins as free living organisms that somehow found there way into cells (possible due to membranes) then staying there due to a symbiotic relationship (both benefit). Lewis Thomas, author of Lives of a cell comments on this symbiotic relationship in his essay "Organelles as Organsims", which I have asked students to read and write a one paragraph summary on. I also gave them another essay of his, to write a two paragraph summary on. These were due today, however I have a horrid Spring cold and was not at school today. Therefore, they are not due until Monday. I do not expect "perfect" summaries on the first go, and will read them and work with students if they need revision. Today, students are watching The Wild Chimpanzees, and have a directed reading from their book from chapter 32-section 3- Primates and Human Origins. Please have this completed by Monday. We will finish the Origins movie Monday and have a review/wrap up on Tues. There will be a quiz Wed. on Evolution and origins and we will began our study of Plants Wed. Students will be assigned a directed reading for Chapter 22 which will be due. We will set up an activity on Tuesday for plants that we will revisit Friday and Friday we will do a flower dissection.

Chapter 17 directed reading (homework)

We are continuing to look at the evolution of plants and animals. Last week we also did a lab showing how membranes work and how the cell is the basic unit of life, due to it's membrane. A series of microscope slides showed increasing complexity in organisms from bacteria to protists(algae) to bryophytes (moss) to ferns, to gymnosperms (conifers) and finally angiosperms (flowering plants).
Origins of life on the planet and Evolution, along with membranes were our main ideas.
This week we are looking at Great Transformations (changes in organsims over time) and the current ideas of the scientific Origin of Humans. Monday we looked at the importance of binocular vision. We are able to have a guest speaker Tuesday. Dr. Dahl, an opthalmologist. He will speak to Health, IPS and Biology about vision and type II diabetes. prevention.
The Chapter 17 directed reading was given out last week and is due Tues. Tuesday, 2nd hour will have the whole class period to complete this.
Population genetics-review notes and Hardy Weinberg equation (homework)

Not such a great day behavior wise 1st hour. I distributed copies of the Population genetics notes, we did a control/PTC paper genetics test as class to see genotypes (dominant can't taste the PTC/ recessive could) started to find allele frequencies. 2nd hour -practice Hardy Weinberg problems-broke out equation.

Today in class we reviewed the 3 processes during which mutations can occur, the ideas mutation can lead to adaptation and introduced the concepts of Evolution through Natural Selection as presented by Darwin. We looked at how artificial selection has been used by humans for years to domesticate plants and animals and made parallels between artificial selection and natural selection. Students completed an informal "pre-test" and I provided an out line for this unit. Tomorrow we will continue with an activity called Diverland showing how speciation (of Darwin's Galapagos Finches) probably occured.

Today in class tests taken yesterday were returned. Students not receiving a C or better were given the opportunity to raise their grade by working on a review to better understand the processes the test was assessing. Any work not completed in class towards mastery can be worked ond during tutorial Tues. and Thurs. morning or I am also availble during lunch or after school tomorrow. Students who were not satisfied with a B on the test were also given the option of obtaining futher mastery of content. Students satisfied with their grade and my professional assesment compared and contrasted two articles VERY relevant to what we have been studying.
2nd hour also made chocolate truffles.

Remember in Meiosis we are only emphasizing crossing over-what is it and what does it mean for genetic diversity (increases it)

Today in class we built on the ideas we have been working with. We have addressed the idea that small changes in DNA, can lead to changes in proteins that are made. These changes are very small and may be adaptive or maladaptive for an organism and are a result of mutations during the process of protein synthesis.
Other types of mutations that occur involve whole chromosomes or pieces of chromosomes. These changes usually have even more dramatic effects on organisms. Today we continued to look at Meiosis, the process of getting chromosomes into the gametes and what happens when non-disjuction occurs. Class consited of lecture with visuals, Meisosis clips, a video clip and modeling the process.
We will be doing a wrap up activity with all of these ideas in class Thurs. and Friday.

Today we had our first Did You Read Quiz on two articles-"Not so Spineless" and "Nature's Best Designs". Some students have been given four copies of each of these articles and were reminded again on Friday.
We also went to the computer lab for a tutorial on MEIOSIS (this is DUE before Tuesday's test)and chromosomes-continuing our study of mutation and how it is acted on by Natural selection. Many students used their time well and were prepared, some did/were not-at all.
I also got a lot of negative attitude from a few students today-Stop it already!
We will begin Darwin and Natural selection on WED.

Today in class we worked on the genetic code. Many students used their time wisely and completed this. I also provided time to complete the quesitons due THURS. for 1st hour and FRI. for 2nd hour. Students who completed their work read an article related to understanding DNA and protein synthesis and how this is being used in nanotechnology applications-they then followed this up by looking up futher info. on things such as using natural occuring substances in butterflies to imrove detection systems or new types of Gecko inspired glue.

Why important-small changes in DNA structure can lead to big changes in proteins. These changes can be both detrimental such as resulting in certain diseases/conditions and adaptive such as giving a population of organisms an advantage in a particular envrionment-sickle cell anemia/resistance to malararial parasite.
Gene expression is what natural selection works on.
Gene expression is regulated-Introns removed from mRNA, exons spliced together, DNA's transcribed message in the form of mRNA goes from the nucleus to the ribosome.
