Chapter 3 Test

Students took the chp. 3 test today. They read silently after completion of the test. We won't begin our next chapter until after Thanksgiving. We'll begin chp. 4 on Ancient China on Monday, November 30th. We'll have the next test on Friday, December 18th. There will be one - two quizzes before hand on Ancient China.

Distributed and reviewed the chp. 3 study guide. There are 15 multiple choice questions and 4 essay questions (students need to select 2 from the 4). The study guide is the attached document to this entry.
Read pages 90-95 in class today.
Homework = take notes/answer the 15 items on the study guide and select two essay topics to take a few notes on in order to prepare for Thursday's test.
ALL Chapter 3 work must be turned in by Thurday, November 19th. It will not be accepted after this date. |

Afterwards, we read pages 88 & 89.

Introduction of hieroglyphics. Students wrote a message to their parents. They viewed the Egyptian hieroglyphics from an overhead transparency and then wrote a quick message - they were cute!

Today in class we read pages 75 and 79.
I shared a sheet of papyrus with my classes.
Students created four flash cards on the vocabulary words: silt, papyrus, delta, cataract. This is in preparation for next week's test.
Homework = flashcards if not complete. Due 11/11
Students who received a score of 25 or less on their test are welcome to retake the test on Thursday morning or Thursday afternoon of this week. Students will have the chance to earn 1/2 pt. for each problem they complete correctly. They cannot retake the test to earn 100%. |

Today in class we:
switched desks, shared about the weekend, discussed current events (Dale W. & AEDs, The Berlin Wall, Fort Hood)
We also began a K-W-L chart about Ancient Egypt. Students shared what they already know about Ancient Egypt and then we made a list of things they want to learn. We'll revisit this chart when we complete the unit.

All work was due today except for the lesson 2 wksht. The last day to turn this assignment in is on Wednesday 11/11. |

Study guides were distributed to students today. We reviewed the study guide and discussed that students will be able to select 18 problems out of the 25 on the test. They will be graded on the 18 problems they select to complete on the test.
Students worked with a partner to created four cards for tomorrow's review game of Jeopardy.

Today in class, students took notes on the vocabulary: archaeologist, archaeology, artifacts and prehistory (on page 11).
We discussed a few current events from the newspaper and then discussed a purple sheet (that should have found its way home) the outlines how grades at LMS are distributed.
The cave painting was due last Friday. The vocabulary preview sheet is due this upcoming Friday. Many students turned this assignment in already. |

Working on the cave paintings for the first half of the period (cave paintings are due tomorrow).
The second half of the period, student were supposed to have read pages 9-11 from the textbook. They should have also received a vocabulary preview worksheet, this is not due until next Friday, October 30th. |

Chapter 1 - Cave Paintings (homework)

Today in class, we discussed the information that was gathered from yesterday's assignment. Students discussed the comparison from their life to their grandparents'.
We then read the timeline on the bottom of pages 2 & 3 and discussed the events labeled.
Students were assigned to create a cave painting that would tell a story of some event in their life. The 'cave painting' is due on Friday, October 23rd. We will have some class time on Thursday to work on this. The cave painting should be on a 11 x 8 1/2 sheet of paper, should be colored and should contain 11 different pictures in the story. No letters or numbers can be used.
I gave the hint to some classes that they could think about a personal narrative they've used in writing, a trip this summer, an accident/injury something that's memorable in their lives. |

We talked about the current event 'Balloon Boy' incident over the four-day weekend and the implications of not telling the truth.
Students worked on comparing their lives at being 11 or 12 yrs. old to their grandparent's lives at the same age. Students need to write down several examples of their: clothing, transportation, technology and beliefs. Then they need to write down the same that their grandparent's experienced when they were 11 or 12 years old. There isn't a required amount of items to recorded under each heading. I'm asking students to write down several/few to stimulate their thoughts. Please see the attached example. |

In class today, students:
Received a goldenrod colored sheet detailing our upcoming 6th grade service learning project. Please ask you child about this special opportunity for a local women's shelter and the patients/residents of the VA hospital and home.
Students were given a quick review of how to access classjump.com They were also reminded to view this site first when they are out due to any absence. If they have questions/concerns they should see me about helping them understand an assignment, receive additional instruction and/or to get caught up in class.
Students worked with a partner in class today in preparing for tomorrow's test. I would have the students write/draw/discuss a portion of what's on the test, then they had to discuss what they wrote with their partner to see if they both came up with the same thing AND then I shared the answers with all of them in a whole group setting. I believe they benefitted greatly with this review session.
ALL LATE WORK IS DUE TOMORROW. AFTER TOMORROW, I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY LATE WORK (unless due to 2 day or more absences from this week).

Mapping Skills Review

Students reviewed/read pages H21-24 in class today. We discussed the time zones and how things a person needs to keep in mind when communicating with people living in different time zones.
We also touched based on map projections (H22-23). Students will not be test on this material but we talked about the significance of using this type of map and the importance of history maps.

Students worked on creating flashcards for the test on Wednesday.

Students read quietly this week's issue of Time For Kids (Time magazine for kids). They were required to write a 1/2 page-single spaced reaction paper to one of the three scenarios. This assignment is due on Monday, October 12th if it wasn't completed in class today. The scenarios are on an attached file.
I met individually with each student today whom has late work/missing work to complete for my class. Please ask you child if they had to meet with me today regarding this concern.
All late work must be turned in by Wednesday, October 14, 2009 as we will be having our unit test on this day. Any late work after 10/14 will not be accepted.

Students read pages H16-H17 in class. After, students answered a total of 9 questions on an overhead transparency. The homework assignment that was given today is due on Friday, October 2nd. The instructions are:
Create a map from Lake Middle School to your house. Maps need to be:
- neat
- colored with color pencil (not marker)
- fill up on side of a sheet of paper
- include road names
- neighborhoods should be shaded in different colors(Wedgewood Park, Eagle Valley, etc.) similar to how a political map is done.
- There should be a key located in the bottom right corner of the map that indicates what the colors mean, and/or any parks, city hall, etc.
Students will be allowed class time tomorrow to work on this assignment.

We discussed the proposal for the Chicago Olympics in 2016, cultural dress in Amman, Jordan and the importance of preparedness in having lockdown drills. These current event items were all in today's newspaper.

Student Council speeches were viewed by students in class today, ballots were distributed and students voted.
I shared with the students the current event news piece regarding President Obama and his thoughts on reducing summer vacation and increasing the length of the school day. Students used some VERY interesting critical thinking skills when replying verbally with their thoughts.
We began learning about geography skills today. Focus on the: northern, southern,eastern and western hemispheres and the importance of the equator & prime meridian.

We discussed these two vocabulary words: nomadic and tradition today. Our focus lesson was about the Maasi people living in Kenya and Tansania. We discussed what culture and tradition mean to us as a whole (community) and individual (religious traditions)

Homework = complete the page 'Traditions' and the page 'Climate' in the packet that was distributed today. Hint: Think like a real estate agent when describing Minnesota's climate. Required: There should be four bulleted points in each box on the 'Traditions' worksheet. I gave many examples and hints in class to help students. Stick with national holidays with the United States category.
