| WELCOME! |
Welcome to my classes and my school. I love Willowcreek Middle School. The community is a solid, stable community with strong families and deeply-rooted values. While I hail from Illinois, I have lived in various western states, and spent summers and a school year in the Deep South. While I love many aspects of those regions of the country, my heart and soul rests here.
Students can email me, share in the discussions on the topics in the different groups, read what other students have written, or check out my links.

Debate is democracy in action. Students learn the structure, the rules, and the power of debate and argumentation. They also conduct research as they write solid cases based on facts and information. They learn to ask the hard questions and to expect reasonable answers. This is a semester-long course, and students write and defend cases. Students taking debate for a second time will use Powerpoints in their cases.

This is a class for students whose first language is something other than English. Students will study the grammar of English, will develop writing and speaking skills in English, and will study literature according to the standards and objectives for English Language Learners. Vocabulary, spelling, sentence structure, writing structures, literature, and reading strategies are some of the things we cover in ESL.
I also advocate strongly for the ELL learners in my building. This is not a sheltered or a self-contained class. They are mainstream students in mainstream classes, but I work closely and persistently with my colleagues to ensure the rigorous work in their classes is modified to provide the ELL students with a rigorous education at their language level.

This is a regular English 7 class with an integrated population of native speakers of English and English language learners (ELL). ALL students in this class will meet the same standards and objectives through differentiated learning. ALL students in this class will do the same work at the same pace.

All of my classes are state- and national-standards driven courses. Students in my Grade 8 English class will read a wide variety of texts which focus on essential questions such as "What do the voices from the "edge" or "fringe" reveal about us as a nation?" We will study myths of the salad bowl we call America, read biographies/autobiographies of those groups on the outside looking in, write using the GoMyAccess program, and delve into the power of poetry. We incorporate informational and instructional text, and bring the elements of grammar into the classroom on a daily basis through Daily Grammar Practice.
