Thirteen year old Koly has an arranged marriage - like many girls her age in India. Unfortunately Koly's husband dies shortly after they marry and per Indian tradition, Koly is forced to remain with her in-laws. Koly's mother in law, Sass, does not care for Koly. Sass takes Koly to Dehli, a holy city, and abandons her in a temple. Now Koly is faced with the challenge of survival in a new place where she knows no one, has no money, and no place to go. She is a homeless bird.
