Things are going well for us in Fifth Grade Math!
Tests will be scheduled every FIVE lessons; at this point, we are looking at WEDNESDAYS for most tests.
Students who miss 5 or more problems on any given homework assignment will take home a 'ponder' asking them to take a fresh look at any problems missed. This allows students to get a better understanding of the math as well as allowing us to properly assess the students' ability to solve the problems.
Keep up the good work!

Because we don't have much time between now and the Christmas Holiday, we are going to complete work on a Mini-Chapter in the next two weeks. We will be briefly be discussing forces and energy, partly as a review and partly to prepare students for the Stanford 10 tests coming up in March. While our Mini-Chapter will not end with a test, there will be several, smaller, announced quizzes over the next two weeks - so nightly review will be an excellent idea!!
After that, we will move on to study our solar system and some of what lies beyond it. Contained in this unit will be one of our largest science projects for the year - so get ready!
The Science Fair is also in our post-holiday lineup. We will be completing the project as a class, but there may be parts students will need to complete individually at home to make up our class project as a whole. As the time gets closer, you will be getting much more information.

Currently in Social Studies, we are working our way through Chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 4 delves into the details of initial European contact with the New World - the arrival of Christopher Columbus and his fellow Spainish conquistadors. We will cover Cortez and his conquering of the Aztec, Pizarro and his conquering of the Inca, as well as the initial settlements set up by the Spanish after these groups were removed from power. Chapter 5 then covers English and French exploration and settlement of the New World; particularly those settlements on the Eastern Seaboard of what is now the United States and Canada.
Look for our Chapters 4 and 5 test sometime before the end of February.
