Course Syllabus: Functional Social Skills

Office Hours: M T TH F: 12:09 a.m.- 1:09 p.m. W: 10:31 a.m. -11:15 a.m.

Course Description: Students develop individualized social studies skills within the domestic, vocational, recreation/ leisure, core curriculum, and general community focus areas. (Thematic Modules, San Diego City Schools, 2000)

Course Objective: Given classroom and individual support (when needed), students will participate and complete the course of learning by daily attendance and meeting IEP benchmarks and goals.

Classroom Expectations: Given staff support and or BSP, all students are to respect staff and their peers, follow directions, keep their hands and feet to themselves, and use appropriate language.

Course Standards: CAPA Content Standards
1. Identify letters, words, and sentences.
2. Follow two-step written instructions.
3. Identify the structural features of popular media (e.g. newspapers, magazines, online information) and use the features to obtain information.
4. Share information and ideas, speaking audibly in complete, coherent sentences.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of concepts of time and tools that measure time.
6. Follow rules, such as sharing and taking turns, and know the consequences of breaking them.
7. Describe how location, weather, and physical environment affect the way people live, including the effects on their food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation.
8. Construct maps and models of neighborhoods, incorporating such structures as police and fire stations, airports, banks, hospitals, supermarkets, harbors, schools, homes, places of worship, and transportation.
9. Put events in temporal order using a calendar, placing days, weeks, and months in proper order.
10. Place important events in their lives in the order in which they occurred.
11. Demonstrate acceptable ways to show or express feelings.
12. Identify appropriate ways to show affection.
13. Develop positive relationships with peers.
14. Develop and use effective communication skills.
15. Practice good personal hygiene.

-Writing Utensils
-Communication Book

Grading Plan:
Student grades will be based on attendance, homework, behavior support plan (BSP), and their Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and benchmarks.

Citizenship:
Grades will be based on their IEP goals and or BSP.

Homework:
All students are required to read or have a book read to them each day. If students do not complete their assignments during class time, they are required to complete it at home.

Attendance: Daily attendance is very important. However, if a student is absent it must be cleared within three days.

Course Description: The Transition Skills class insures that students will gain functional skills in the areas of workability, socializing with peers, and problem solving in school and community settings. Students will be given the tools to make positive choices in building healthy lifestyles, advocating for themselves, and setting personal goals.

Course Objective: Given classroom and individual support (when needed), students will participate and complete the course of learning by daily attendance and meeting IEP benchmarks and goals.

1. Locate information by using a variety of consumer, workplace, and public documents.
2. Understand the concept of exchange and the use of money to purchase goods and services.
3. Solve problems using combinations of coins and bills.
4. Give and follow directions about location.
5. Communicate observations orally and through drawings.
6. Discuss the importance of public virtue and the role of citizens, including how to participate in a classroom, in the community, and in civic life.
7. Match simple descriptions of work that people do and the names of related jobs at the school, in the local community, and historical accounts.
8. Identify traffic symbols and map symbols.
9. Identify and share feelings in appropriate ways.
10. Practice safe behavior in or near motorized vehicles.
