| Welcome! |
Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
Welcome to Veterans Memorial Middle School and sixth grade math! This letter will provide you with information about our math class and answer some questions you may have about the year.
The beginning of sixth grade is always exciting and a little scary. Your teachers will help to smooth out some of the scary parts. Sixth grade requires students to assume more responsibility for their academics as well as social interaction. In math class we will build on all of the math topics learned in previous years and extend our mathematical thinking algebraically. Our units will include Data Analysis, Agebra, Measurement, Geometry and Probability. Problem solving will be woven throughout.
Homework is an important aspect of learning and will be assigned on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Homework is graded on completion. Students are expected to make up all missed assignments. Late assignments will be given partial credit. No credit is given for answers without work shown. Homework assignments will be posted on the school website.
Assessment is another important aspect of learning. There will be at least one formal assessment (quiz or test) each week. Grades will be weighted as follows:
Tests/projects 60% Homework/quizes/classwork 40%
Students are expected to come to class each day with necessary materials. Please ensure that your student has an ongoing supply of pencils and paper. Only work done in pencil will be accepted.
I am very happy and excited to have the opportunity to teach your child mathematics this year. I will make every effort to make lessons both interesting and effective. A strong home-school line of communication is essential to academic success and I invite your questions and concerns. Please contact me via e-mail at rbristow@mcsdga.net. I will do my best to return your e-mail within 48 hours.
Once again, welcome to Veterans Memorial Middle School!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Becky Bristow
