| Welcome to Mr. Daly's Class Room 305 |
Hello!
My name is Mr. Daly and I teach science and math for 7th and 8th graders.
This year we have done a number of wonderful labs. We have learned the metric system by using M & M's and 2 liter sodas. We have learned about the 3 stages of matter using rose pedals and chocolate bars. We have learned the difference between plant cells and animal cells by carving up pumpkins.
What a minute! Do ALL of the labs require things to eat? No, silly. We made homemade polymers out of baking soda, glue and water. We also used glasses and paper towels to prove that we can dunk a paper towel under water and it will not get wet IF it is in a vacuum.
We have discussed air flow, with respect to racing cars and wind resistance. We did this by watching the flow of air split up around a cylinder-shaped object, simply to join up again on the other side. We proved this by lighting a candle on one side of the object and then blowing from the opposite side of the object.
We have memorized 16 of the most important elements on the periodic table.
We have completed a unit on heat, focusing on the creation of heat via both conduction and convection.
In the area of Algebra, we are working on one step equations, using the distributive property and the FOIL method. This is in preparation for the use and understanding of the quadradic formula..
Along with building our Algebra skills, we review some of the basic skills in multiplication, division. fractions and decimals.
Welcome once again to our room 305 website.
Parents and family members: Feel free to call me anytime. Or, stop on by to discuss your child's progress.
Thanks!

Thanksgiving homework (homework)
Due Date: November 21, 2008 |
 |
For the week of Thanksgiving, please do three things:
1. Go shopping with a family member and add up all the items needed to buy.
2. Assist a family member in cooking some part of the holiday meal. Write down step-by-step the process you used.
3. Locate a local newspaper and look for an article related to "science in the news." The Quest section is an excellent place to do that. Read that article, cut that article out and write down some notes on the article. When you report back to school, you will report out to the class on that article.
