ELA 7 Message Board
What a great start!

Welcome to ELA 7. This is sure to be an amazing year full of intellectual and personal growth. After nearly ten years teaching the seniors at W.H.S., I am very excited to be working with the seventh grade team W.J.S.H.S.

What to expect:

This year, students will be expected to complete nightly reading assignments. Beginning Monday, September 17, all students will be expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes per night. Information will be recorded in the students’ reading logs, and parents/guardians will need to sign as verification that the reading took place. There will be periodic assessments on this reading.
Students will also continue their study of writing, with much focus on the essay format. Our writings will be based on close-reading of texts, interpretations of literature, and the use of literary elements and devices.

Please use this page to check for upcoming assignments, projects, or tests.

9/17 - Today we begin our independent reading assignments. Every night, reading will be assigned for homework; EVERY NIGHT! Besure to complete your reading log to receive credit. We will be writing about our reading in class.

9/20 - It was great to meet so many parents last night. Thank you to all those who came to open house.

9/26 - Our first quiz of the year will be on Friday, Sept. 28. All students should study their vocab words and fiction notes.

10/1 - MAKE-UP WEEK begins Wednesday. This Wednesday and Thursday, students will be invited to come after school to redo any assignment they wish. Also, this is a great time for them to make-up wrok missed due to absences.

10/9 - The final make-up session before interims will be Wednesday, 10/10. Iterim reports should be arriving by Saturday.

Congratulations to the winners of our first ELA PBIS drawing. Each winner won a McDonalds gift card. A drawing is held every 5 weeks.

Our SRI assessments will be held on Wednesday, 10/10.

10/11 - Our SRI assessment went very well. All students have received a recommended reading list based on their results.

10/14 - On Tuesday, 10/16, we will have our first Selection Test. This test will cover all of the notes and readings we've done so far in unit 1.

10/24 - Today we are beginning our next reading - an autobiography called "MK." This autobiography details the transition a "missionary kid" makes as she moves from China to the U.S.

10/25 - Writing Journals will be collected tomorrow (Friday, 10/26). A list of our entries can be found below.

10/29 - If you haven't already, I encourage you to subscribe for updates. By subscribing, you will receive an e-mail notification any time something is posted to our class site. Instead of randomly checking the site for updates, announcements, or assignments, why not receive an e-mail? To subscribe, click the link in the upper left corner of the page that says, "Subscribe for updates."

10/31 - Happy Halloween!! I wish all of you a very safe and happy Halloween! Today we reviewed how to write an introduction paragraph. By the end of the week, our first essay will be completed.

11/5 - Reminder: There is no school for students tomorrow (11/6).

Today all students received the story "Papa's Parrot." See below for the assignment and details.

Our first quarterly exam will be taken on Friday, 11/9.

CONGRATULATIONS!! Several seventh graders will be rewarded for completing their daily reading assignment each day. On Friday we will celebrate with a pizza party after school!

The invited students are:
Maria Baughn, Sheila Caminiti, Brandie Lance, Bethany Livsey, Myah Wells, Justin Cusson, Alexandria Weihrich, Patrick Ethier, McCormick Fisk, Angela Keefer, and Kenneth Keefer.

The Second Quarter Begins...

11/12 - We had such a great time at the Reading Log Party! There was food, music, a visit from Mr. Foust, and a good time had by all. I still don't know why McCormick was in the box, though...Hopefully, we'll have even more students join us for our next party in January!!

Also, congratulations to our four PBIS in ELA raffle winners: Angela, Kelsea, Jawan, and Patrick! Each student won an enormous chocolate bar!!

Our Outside Reading Requirement (OSR) assignment will be handed out tomorrow (11/13). This is a written assignment that is based on something that the students read outside of class during the first quarter.

11/26 - Now that we have returned from Thanksgiving break, our attention will be on S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. We will begin reading this week.

12/6 - Our reading of The Outsiders has been going very well. In fact, many students have read ahead because they like the book so much. Reminder - students have assigned reading Monday -Thurday for 20 minutes. The Outsiders is a book that can be used for their independent reading assignments.

Also, students have begun to take the Reading Counts assessments. These are computer based quizzes that assess their knowledge of books that were read independently. Any students who pass the Reading Counts quiz are invited to a reward celebration on 12/21!!

12/17 - Congratulations to all of the students who qualified for our first round of Reading Counts. On Friday, these students will be treated to a movie reward, as we'll be watching Elf!

As our reading of The Outsiders comes to an end, we will turn our attention to the movie version of the book. As we watch the movie, special attention will be given to the plot differences, the way the director characterizes the Greasers and the Socs, and the different settings.

Congrats to Brandie, Justin, Caitlyn, Ken, and Devon for winning our PBIS raffle!

1/2 - Our second SRI assessment will be given tomorrow. The SRI assessment is a computer based reading test that evaluates a student's current reading ability.

1/10 - As we enter the third quarter, much of out attention will be directed to poetry. We will focus on various forms of poetry, as well as a wide variety of poetic elements and devices.

1/20 - Midterm Week. The ELA midterm exam will be given this week. Please check the link below for an advanced peek at the questions!
