Creative Writing
The focus of this class is on the writing process. Plan to write everyday in class. You will be writing journal entries daily, along with weekly and long-term projects. Students will compile a portfolio of stories, poems and essays. Independent writing, peer evaluation, revision and publication are covered. Additionally, you also will be required to do some reading to aid in your understanding of the writing process. Short stories, poetry and novels will be read and discussed. If you do not like to write, this is not the class for you.
Employment Education
In this class you will explore possible job paths for yourself, examine different post secondary options, learn to write resumes/cover letters, participate in a mock interview, learn about finances, and more!
Issues in Literature
Not only will you read novels that will push your thinking about yourself and the world in this class, but you will also learn the skills needed to be a college-level writer! Issues in Literature is a one-semester course in which students will read several renowned novels and poems, write critical essays and learn to use several different types of literary criticism. Students will also complete a poetry portfolio and an independent book project. Plan to read, discuss, write and offer your own thoughts in this course!
Spanish I
During this introductory course, the students will learn Spanish by using the language and interacting in the classroom on a daily basis. Students will study the present tense and learn basic verb conjugation. They will achieve some proficiency in the four skills of writing, reading, speaking and listening. Students will acquire a basic understanding and appreciation of the diversity of cultures in the Spanish speaking world. This is a homework intensive course.
Yearbook
Yearbook is a yearlong course culminating in the planning, production and distribution of an annual yearbook. The students gain practical experience in organizing a project through business management, writing, graphic art, proofreading, design, advertising, photography, salesmanship and leadership. Layout and design are done using an online program. Students are required to take pictures at school events throughout the school year. This class may be taken for three consecutive years beginning with one's sophomore year. Students must get references from teachers and submit a sample of writing.
