Fifth grade is soaring forward!The February book report is a historical fiction book and it is due on February 27th.
class procedures
Homework
Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday. It includes Math, Spelling, and 20 minutes of reading that needs to be recorded in a reading log. Homework should not exceed 50 minutes. Extra class time in the morning before school is available for finishing homework or for asking questions about homework. The current week's homework can be found on the homework link.
Language
We will start expository writing this trimester as we prepare for PACE.
Math
Fifth Grade Math Practice.
We will continue to work on multiplication, but we will also begin working on division as well. We will be rounding using compatible numbers.
Reading
We will read a story a week in our anthology book and we will take weekly on-line assessments of our comprehension of those stories. In addition to the stories we will also read novels throughout the year. We have started our fourth novel: The Watsons Go To Birmingham In 1963. We will also independently read a book a month and present an oral book report. The schedule and forms for the book reports are on the link.
Science
The second trimester of science is a unit on living organisms. We will learn about plant and animal cells. We will learn how changes in the environment affect living organisms. We will be keeping a science journal to record our experiments and to define vocabuary.
Social Studies
Fifth grade Social Studies is all about America, from its first people up to the Civil War. We will cover the development and expansion of America, the Revolutionary War, the Constitution and the development of our democratic form of government.
Spelling
Weekly Spelling Lists can be downloaded from the spelling link. Spelling lists Students are given a pre-test on Monday and they are given the weekly list to put in their binders. Spelling practice is part of the weekly homework. The spelling test is on Friday, unless it is a short week.
