To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries.”

This course will follow the curricular guidelines of the College Board, AP English Literature and Composition Course Description, and the Meridian School District. Following these guidelines will help prepare you for the challenge of college-level reading, writhing, and analytical thinking. The texts for this course include a variety of time periods and genres, with a focus on American and British literature in poetry, prose, and dramatic form. You will write several essays, both in-class and out of class that are meant to develop and show your level of analytical thinking. Many of the essays will also go through the revision and editing process. This is considered a college-level course, which means that many of the texts that are read will be challenging and thought provoking. You will be expected to come to class prepared to work hard and meet the challenges of this course.
This course is designed to prepare you for college as well as the skills necessary for completing the AP English Literature exam. The focus of the class is not the exam itself, but rather the skills that are necessary to be successful in college. We will work together to develop the skills needed for critical reading, thinking, and writing. I strongly encourage all students to take the AP exam in May.
