Yearbook
Welcome to Yearbook with Miss Winans!
Yearbook is an exciting, challenging, and fun class, and I look forward to working with you all throughout the upcoming year. Throughout this class, you will learn about page layout and design, publishing, journalism, photography, and business skills. Being a member of the staff is an awesome responsibility, but by the end of the year, you have produced a book that is valued by the students, faculty, and community. Goals: The goal of this course is to introduce you to all of the elements of publishing and selling a published book. We ultimately will be producing the school’s yearbook, but along the way we will cover topics such as copy writing, photography, editing, marketing, and creativity. Course description: “Yearbook” is a two-semester, elective course (only for self-motivated and amicable students) that gives students marketable experience in print media publishing. This course solely works toward the completion and selling of a large finished product, Miller School’s yearbook. Yearbook class is dynamically different from every course taught at this school in that it is a real business maintaining an actual account that must balance-out at the end of term. In class, students compose, construct, and edit all elements of computerized text layout, graphic art, and digital photography. Students work on many clerical operations, make announcements, maintain signs, conduct student polls, and maintain hardcopy files. This course also examines legal and ethical issues of media law and copyright. Yearbook in turn covers a plethora of the Content Standards and Objectives encountered in English courses, as does it also for Objectives of art, business, and computer technology courses. Because Yearbook is a monetary business, students must cooperatively work with others, must be industrious, and be eager to be creative. Out of class and after school, students will “shoot” digital photos, sell and design advertising, and distribute yearbook order forms. Students are responsible for the proper care and handling of our digital camera. Students should expect to spend some of their Cardinal Time or extra school time working on computerized yearbook pages. |
