CIS Spanish 1003
This is a University of Minnesota course offered for dual credit. A student may earn 2 World Language credits on their high school transcript along with 5 university credits from the U of M. (These credits are transferable to other colleges as well.) A student must earn a C- or higher in the course in order to receive university credit. This course runs Trimesters 1 and 2 of the District 833 calendar and Semester 1 of the U of M calendar. (Please note that this is a university course and that the student's final grade will become part of their transcript for any university that they attend. Also, any student caught cheating is held to U of M standards which may result in a failing grade and/or dismissal from the program.)

For this, you will do all preparation outside of class as all classtime will be dedicated to communicating in the language. CIS Spanish 1004

Spanish 1
This course will provide students with an introduction to the Spanish language by practicing a variety of vocabulary topics and grammatical structures. Students will also learn about different countries and cultures. Students will engage in reading, writing, listening and speaking on topics such as the following: introducing/describing oneself, school activities and subjects, shopping for school supplies, clothing and food, ordering food at a restaurant, pastimes with family and in the home, sports, hobbies, geography, countries and cities.
Preparation and Participation: Regular attendance, preparation and participation are central to your success in this course. Anticipate some type of homework or assignment nightly in preparation for class the next day. It is important that you are present and prepared every class day and that you actively participate in class. Students are encouraged to speak Spanish as much as possible. ***Please note that the instructor will speak in Spanish the majority of the class period and it is expected that the student attempt to use his or her Spanish as much as possible as he or she learns. The majority of learning will take place inside the walls of the classroom. For this reason, please be mindful of not missing class, and being actively present when in class. Thank you!*** Grading: 20% Listening 20% Reading 20% Speaking 20% Writing 20% Culture and Connections Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing Exams will be a summative assessment of lesson 1 and 2 of each unit studied. There will be approximately 2-3 unit summative exams per trimester. Trimester 1 = Preliminary, Unit 1, Unit 2 Trimester 2 = Unit 3, Unit, 4, Unit 5/Lesson 1 Trimester 3 = Unit 5 Lesson 2, Unit 6, Unit 7 The Culture and Connections category consists of on-going formative assessments to evaluate what the student has learned in preparation for the summative unit exams. This may include participation points for daily oral proficiency questions, homework assignments, and lesson quizzes on vocabulary and grammar. PLEASE NOTE: ALL ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ENTERED INTO INFINITE CAMPUS BASED ON A 100% SCALE. The Spanish Department uses the 833 grading scale. Extra credit is not offered. The student's grade is based on their proficiency in the 4 language areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A comprehensive assessment will be given at the conclusion of each trimester. Spanish 2
This course will provide students with an opportunity to expand their skills in the Spanish language by practicing both the present and past tenses, discussing future events, and giving commands. Students will be encouraged to use as much Spanish in the classroom as possible in order to reach a higher level of speaking proficiency. Students will engage in reading, writing, listening and speaking on a variety of topics including the following: travel, food, cultural comparisons and differences, technology, and how to communicate within an increasingly global society.

Spanish 3
This course will provide students with an opportunity to further their communication skills in the Spanish language by practicing a variety of tenses and grammatical structures. Students will engage in reading, writing, listening and speaking on topics such as the following: technology, shopping, pastimes, hobbies, hotels, airplane travel, medical emergencies, geography, countries, cities, cooking and car travel.
Preparation and Participation: Regular attendance, preparation and participation are central to your success in this course. Anticipate some type of homework or assignment nightly in preparation for class the next day. It is important that you are present and prepared every class day and that you actively participate in class. Speaking and writing will be highly emphasized in this course. Students are encouraged to speak Spanish as much as possible. Spanish 4
In this course, students will engage in a more in depth study of the Spanish language. Students will review and demonstrate a mastery of all language skills learned in previous language courses, learn several new tenses and increase their level of proficiency. Students will develop improved reading, writing and speaking skills. An emphasis on reading and writing will be added while furthering the student's speaking ability.
En esta clase vamos a practicar todas partes del lenguaje. Vamos a leer, escribir, escuchar, y hablar todo en espaņol. La profesora va a usar el espaņol la mayoria del tiempo y los estudiantes tienen que hablar en espaņol lo mas que posible. Vamos a usar la tecnologia, videos, y la computadora para comunicarnos.
