Content and Standards Covered:
Language Arts:
 Reading and Researching through Expository and Persuasive Text—taking notes and using textual evidence
 Reading and Responding to Narrative Text through analysis and critique
 Writing Personal Connections, Summaries, and narratives for a specific purpose
 Writing Expository and Persuasive Text
 Writing and Presenting Responses to Literature
 Functional Document—Structural features, content and purpose of public documents
 Reading and writing Multiple Genres—i.e. Myths, Epic Poetry, and Legends form various civilizations

Required Daily: Students will have textbook (1 kept in class 1 kept at home), binder (issued by school), paper, pencil, and lanyard (issued by school) worn around neck. Binder is to be kept neat, clean, professional and organized. Lost binders and lanyards will be replaced by student at their own cost.

Tardy policy: Students will be considered tardy if not in class by the time the tardy bell rings.

Homework Policy: Daily reading for 30 minutes is required. This should be grade appropriate material but entirely up to the choice of the student. Other class homework is periodically assigned


Makeup work: All work is due at the beginning of class on the due date. Work may be resubmitted for higher grades up to one week prior to progress reports.

Grades: Grades are based upon class work, class participation, homework, tests, papers, and projects.

Grading Scale:
90-100% A
80-89% B All Students should be in this range!!!
70-79% C
60-69% D With the ability to make up and resubmit work
Below 60% F any student who chooses to be at these levels
does so by their own choice.

Classroom Rules:
• Treat everyone with respect (including yourself)
• Keep hands and feet to yourself (No play fighting!)
• Enter the room prepared and ready to work
• Raise your hand and wait to be called upon before speaking
• Always follow teacher instructions
• No food, gum, drinks (except water), or electronic devices

Consequences for Unacceptable Behavior:
1. Verbal warning
2. Detention-parent contact
3. If you no show for detention—double detention and parent contact
4. Request for parent input and participation
5. Parent conference—counselor involvement
6. In school suspension
7. Referral to Dean or Vice Principle

Absences: All missed work must be made up or zero points will be given. Student is responsible for obtaining missed work.

Parent Communication: Communication between student, parent and staff will be conducted in person, by phone, through email or written notes. School communication day is Thursday.

Available Tutoring:
Students are encouraged to come in before or after school for additional help or questions about assignments.

Expectations:
Every student will be successful. They will try their best, complete assigned work on time, and be responsible. Together we will increase our knowledge and prepare for our future.

My goal is for each and every student to maximize their potential this year in Language Arts. I encourage parents/ guardians to please do your best in assisting your children with their school work. I will do my very best to assist your child with his/her goals as a student this year. As a team, we can work together to increase your child’s academic performance this year! Thank you!
