9th Grade Power Standards
1. Identify and correct fragments and run-ons, easily confused words, capitalization, and basic punctuation.
2. Use a dictionary, thesaurus, and text features effectively.
3. Develop vocabulary by inference from context clues. Apply decoding strategies.
4. Identify and put to use several difference reading strategies (specifically identifying the main idea, recalling facts, summarizing, and paraphrasing, focus, and inferencing.)
5. Identify and analyze several different genres (specifically the novel, the short story, drama, and non-fiction.)
6. Identify and analyze basic elements of literature: character, setting, plot structure, portagonist, antagonist, theme, metaphor/simile, irony, mood/tone, and symbolism.
7. Find and record information from non-fiction sources and evaluate those sources for reliability (especially internet sources).
8. Identify examples of plagiarism and avoid by properly documenting. Put to use "turnitin.com".
9. Using a well-developed research question, organize a research paper that presents a throught-provoking thesis with adequate support.
10. Write cohesive paragraphs for a variety of purposes.
