3rd block students finished reading Romeo and Juliet, Act 5 Scene 3. "All are punished." Test is tomorrow!

4th block students continued to review poetry terms and Greek gods/goddesses. We continued to watch Odyssey. EOCT scores were posted - 95% passing!

4th block students- teacher absence- students wrote a persuasive essay on whether or not vending machines should be allowed to remain in schools.

3rd block students completed an EDE, then read scenes 1 and 3 of Act 4 from Romeo and Juliet. We began Act 4 questions, and watched the DVD of "R+J."

4th block students took notes on non-fiction lit terms and wrote their final drafts of the essay for Super Size Me.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Thursday, December 6

3rd block did not meet

4th bloc students completed the documentary, Super Size Me, and began the rough draft for an expository essay on the experiment. They also completed an Every Day Edit. We will write the final draft for the essay next class.

 

Today in 9th Lit..Wednesday, December 5

3rd block students completed Act 3 of Romeo and Juliet, both reading and completing questions. They also worked on writing using the Schaffer system to complete paragraphs with quotations and parenthetical documentation. We will continue R+J on Friday, completing Act 4.

 

4th block students completed the second part of the EOCT and viewing Super Size Me. Students will write an expository essay on the documentary Thursday and Friday.

3rd block students did not meet.

4th block students took the first section of the End of Course Test. This counts for 20% of their overall grade.

 

 

Today in 9th Lit...Monday, December 3

3rd Block students reviewed the Act 2 questions from Romeo and Juliet, then took a quiz on Act 2. They watched some of the DVD and took home the first page of the Act 3 questions to work on for homework. We also reviewed lit terms and did a grammar warm-up Every Day Edit, "Basketball."

4th Block students did a grammar warm-up Every Day Edit, "Basketball," and reviewed research, citations, and poetry terms for the EOCT on Tuesday and Wednesday. We also continued to watch and answer questions for the documentary, Super Size Me. Today in 9th Lit...Friday, November 30

3rd Block students did not meet.

4th Block students took a "practice" EOCT reading portion, then watched part of the non-fiction unit's documentary "Super Size Me" and began completing guided notes. They will have the option of writing an essay for this documentary to replace another writing they may have missed.  THE EOCT FOR THIS CLASS WILL BE GIVEN ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. Today in 9th Lit...Thursday, November 29

3rd Block students worked on the "annolighting" assignment for the balcoy scene in Romeo and Juliet and turned it in. They then worked on writing a constructed paragraph on Romeo and Juliet's "love." Finally, they watched a few minutes of the DVD, Romeo +Juliet.

4th Block students worked in their workbooks on research, conventions, Georgia authors, and literature terms. They also made a "vocabulary map" for literature terms.

 

Today in 9th Lit... Wednesday, November 28

3rd Block did not meet.

4th Block- students completed workbook pages GA 54-65. This work addresses the "Writing" portion of the upcoming EOCT, which will be given on Tuesday. Students reviewed research techniques, bibliography entries, parenthetical documentation, and writing and revising techniques. Finally, we reviewed poetry terms and analysis with a reread of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven." The packet for this is to be completed for homework tonight.

 

 

Today in 9th Lit.  Tuesday, November 27

3rd Block- class completed an EDE "Iceman" and did an "annolighting" exercise for the balcony scene of Romeo and Juliet. Working with a partner, students went line-by-line through the scene, highlighting and annotating the meanings, metaphors, and gist of this very famous piece of writing. After the annolighting, students started the Act 2 questions, which must be completed for homework.

 

4th Block- students completed an EDE "Iceman" and wrote a business letter in which they requested a refund or exchange for a defective product. After this, they finished watching "Akeelah and the Bee" and completed the questions that go with the viewing. Finally, students took home a work packet on Mass Media- practice for the EOCT.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Monday, November 26

 

3rd Block did not meet.

4th Block students wrote and wrote today!!! They completed workbook pages GA 45, 47, 49, and 51 on research writing to prepare for the EOCT. They wrote an autobiography of themselves (obviously) and a biography of a partner in class. Finally, the watched a few minutes of the true story of "Akeelah and the Bee,"

 

 

Today in 9th Lit...Friday, November 16

3rd Block students turned in a "packet" of five daily assignments from the week for a 50-point formative grade. These included EDE's, workbook pages, and questions from Romeo and Juliet. We read the end of Act 1 of R+J and watched to the balcony scene of Act 2. More on Romeo and Juliet after the break. Students should make up missing assignments over the break and turn them in on the Tuesday we return from Thanksgiving. Check Pinnacle for missing grades- "z" grades. I'm always available after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays unti 4:30 for individual tutoring and make-up work!

Finally, after much technical difficulty, we put benchmark answers in I-Respond. This is a check to see how students are doing overall in English, and what skills we still need to focus on. Students should make up missing assignments over the break and turn them in on the Monday we return from Thanksgiving. Check Pinnacle for missing grades- "z" grades. I'm always available after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4:30 for individual tutoring and make-up work!

3rd Block did not meet.

4th Block- students read and watched MLK's "I Have a Dream Speech," took notes on the literature terms for a persuasive speech, and found examples from the speech which Dr. King used.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Wednesday, November 14

3rd Block- Students completed an Every Day Edit, "The Hope Diamond," and turned in their homework questions from their textbook, pg. 778-9 on the background to Shakespeare's theater. They also read Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet, then watched it on DVD. For homework, they are to complete the guided questions from Act 1.

4th Block- Students completed an Every Day Edit, "The Hope Diamond," and completed the workbook page 123, non-fiction terms. They watched "Mythbusters" and wrote ten questions and answers about the DVD. Finally, they analyzed the top ten Super Bowl ads of 2012.  Students need their textbooks tomorrow, as we will be reading King's "I Have a Dream Speech."

 

 

Today in 9th Lit...Tuesday, November 13

4th block -Students took notes on advertising techniques, completed a workbook exercise, pg. 3,  on non-fiction, and worked in groups to analyze ads. They also completed a ticket out the door based on a video commercial for a minivan.

 

Today in 9th LIt...Monday, November 12

3rd block- Students began reading Romeo and Juliet- prlogue and Act 1. They also completed an EDE.

4th block- Students finished an EDE and wrote an essay on Romeo and Juliet finding someone to blame for their deaths. They did a prewrite, rough draft and final. This will be a summative grade.

Students took the test on R+J and completed a "contructed response" (short answer).

 

Today in 9th Lit... Thursday, November 8

Students read Act 5, Scene 3 of R+J and analyzed the scene. We reviewed for the R+J test with drama terms, which will be tomorrow.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Wednesday, November 7

Students began class with an Every Day Edit, then took the Romeo and Juliet Quiz for Act 4. Next, they read out loud Act 5 and wrote a "ticket out the door" telling the final scenes in the movie as compared to the play.. They will take the Romeo and Juliet Test (Drama unit) on Friday.

3rd Block- students completed an Every Day Edit, "Time Zones," and a worksheet on irregular verbs. They also complete an anticipation guide for Romeo and Juliet and wrote thanksgiving letters to troops serving overseas. Students MUST bring a textbook to class Thursday, as we will be reading Romeo and Juliet.

3rd block took their Fiction Unit test, on cold reads and literature terms.

4th block completed an Every Day Edit and read the end of Act 3 R+J. We watched the DVD of R+J to the end of the act.

3rd block did not meet.

4th block completed an Every Day Edit, read Romeo and Juliet, Act 3, and took notes on the play.

3rd block completed test corrections. They also completed an Every Day Edit, and worked on literature terms using flashcards.

4th block wrote a paper on Romeo and Juliet to answer the question of whether they were in love or just infatuation.

3rd block did not meet.

4th block took power point notes on lit terms from Romeo and Juliet to review for our drama test next week, Nov. 9. We also drew coats of arms for the Capulets and Montagues and identified which characters belonged to which house.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Friday, October 26

3rd completed the Speak study guide and turned it in. We also completed an Every Day Edit.

4th block turned in their homework packet and watched part of Act 3 of Romeo and Juliet. The quiz is postponed until next week- we're reviewing Act 3.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Thursday, October 25

3rd block does not meet, but students should complete the "Speak" study guide, as well as the novel. Their is also a grammar/vocabulary packet due. All work is due on Friday.

4th block is completing the questions for Romeo and Juliet, Act 3 and viewing the DVD. We will have a quiz on Act 3 on Friday. Their homework packets are also due on Friday.

Yes, Mrs. Jordan will be grading all weekend! :)

 

Today in 9th Lit...Wednesday, October 24

Students in 3rd Block will warm up with an "Every Day Edit," which checks for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage skills. These are similar to a section of the EOCT. They will also continue reading "Speak" and finishing the guiding questions for the reading. The reading and the packet should be finished by Friday, October 26.

Student in 4th Block will warm up with an "Every Day Edit," and will finish their Act 2 Romeo and Juliet questions and turn them in. They will also complete "The Necklace" packet for test corrections for those that needed to do the remediation from the fiction unit test.

Students in 3rd Block did not meet.

Students in 4th Block read Act 2 of Romeo and Juliet and watched the DVD of the same act. They also worked on the homework packet, which is due Friday.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Monday, October 22

Students in 3rd and 4th Block took the Scholastic Reading Inventory in the computer lab to determine if they will need a reading class next semester. Students also began to get together four assignments from Romeo and Juliet, given out while the sub was here, to be turned in for a homework packet grade on Friday (formative grade of 50 points). These include a crossword puzzle of drama terms, an anticipation guide, a background worksheet, and R&J Act 1 Questions. These are due along with an Every Day Edit on Friday for both classes.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Friday, October 19

Students in 4th block took the REALLY BIG MID-TERM EXAM! This was mostly a test of reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, and literature terms. They also turned in flashcards of the lit terms for a daily "formative" grade. On Monday we will continue Romeo and Juliet.

Today in 9th Lit... Thursday, October 18

Students in 3rd block took a quiz for the reading on "Speak" and worked on study guides for the novel. The study guide is due the day of the test. Students also competed a "ticket out the door" Every Day Edit.

Students in 4th block read Act 2, Scenes 1 and 2 from Romeo and Juliet. They also began a study guide of questions for Act 2, to be turned in when we finish the play. The midterm is tomorrow, which is an analysis of "cold reads" for reading comprehension, as well as some literature terms. Students should have flashcards of these.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Wednesday, October 17

Students in 4th block reread the Prologue to Romeo and Juliet, listened to it, clapped to the rhythm of iambic pentameter, and walked in circles, turning directions every time they heard the pauses. They will read Act 2 tomorrow. Bring books! Please sign and return the syllabus that went home today.

Today in 9th Lit...Tuesday, October 16

Students in 3rd block discussed the novel, "Speak," and will have a quiz on the reading through "Second Marking Period" on Thursday. 4th block finished their county benchmark test with the extended response portion of the exam.

 

Today in 9th Lit...Monday, October 15

Students in 4th block  took the 1st part of the county benchmark test. They will take the writing portion on the next meeting day. In addition, students in 4th block will continue with Romeo and Juliet. They must have their textbooks to read this play!!! Students in 3rd block did not meet.
