Language Arts 11 A-B
POWER STANDARDS: Revised September 2009
1. Read grade-level instructional text.
2. Apply decoding strategies to “problem-solve” unknown words when reading.
3. Develop vocabulary through text, using roots and affixes, context clues, glossary dictionary and thesaurus.
4. Apply pre-reading strategies to aid comprehension by accessing prior knowledge, previewing and predicting.
5. During reading, utilize strategies to self-question and correct, infer, visualize, predict and check
6. Apply post-reading skills to comprehend and interpret text through questioning to clarify, reflecting, analyzing, summarizing and drawing conclusions
7. Analyze and evaluate author’s use of figurative language (emphasizing metaphor, simile, personification, and irony), imagery and sound devices in poetry, prose and nonfiction.
8. In composing text, use a variety of sentence structures, cohesive devices, and active voice.
9. Follow a writing process to independently create appropriate graphic organizers as needed and apply the writing process to write effectively in various forms and types of writing.
10. Use details from text to analyze and evaluate the logic, reasonableness, and audience appeal of arguments, character, plot, setting, point of view, and theme in texts and to identify and analyze faulty reasoning and unfounded inferences.
