Independent Reading Assignment #1
updated September 16, 2009
On September 15, 2009 students received their first Independent Reading Assignment of the year-the Book Jacket Project. The project requires students to select a fiction novel of their choice and complete the project requirements after reading the novel. The project will be due November 2, 2009. I have suggested to students that they spend 15-20 minutes a night either reading their novel or working on the project once they are done reading. Students created book jacket templates in class. The components of the book jacket project are as follows:

Panel #1-Author's notes-glue a picture of yourself or sketch a self-portrait on the top portion of this section. Then write a one paragraph (5 sentence minimum) biography about yourself underneath.

Panel #2-Back cover-On the top half of the back cover write a paragraph (5 sentence minimum) that highlights the most exciting element of the book. On the bottom half of the cover, write a paragraph (5 sentence minimum) review of the book. This paragraph should tell what you liked and disliked about the book.

Panel #3-The spine-Include the title of the book and the author's name. Then write the name of the publisher at the bottom of the panel.

Panel #4-Front cover-Design a cover for your book jacket that includes the title of the book, the author's name, and your name. Include a related illustration.

Panel #5 & 6-Summary-Write a three paragraph summary of the book that highlights the beginning, middle, and end of the novel.

Panel #7-Venn Diagram-Draw a Venn Diagram and place your name on one side and the name of the main character on the other. Compare and contrast similarities and differences the both of you have. Write in complete sentences.

Panel #8-Main Character-Write the name of the character in this section. Find 5 character traits that describe him or her. Explain why you chose the character traits you did.

Panel #9-Conflict/Resolution-Identify the main conflict from the novel and draw a picture that illustrates it. Under the picture, write a paragraph describing the conflict. Then draw a picture of the resolution to the conflict. Under the picture, write a paragraph describing the resolution.

Panel #10-Vocabulary-As you read, look up words whose meaning you don't know. List ten words and their definitions that were unfamiliar to you when you first started reading the book.
