*AP SPANISH, 2010-2011
*AP Spanish is a course designed for advanced students who are capable of working on a college level in Spanish during their senior year at Boonton High in School. This course is significantly more challenging than previous Spanish classes. In AP Spanish, students will study the work of Spanish and Hispanic authors, including poetry and prose selections from all literary genres. AP Spanish students will also become familiar with other artistic expressions, including works from the performing and visual arts.

The goal of AP Spanish is to enable students to demonstrate their achievement in college-level work by taking the Advanced Placement Exam in Spanish, offered in May of each school year. Required summer work will include reading, writing, and listening exercises, as well as oral recordings to prepare for the Advanced Placement Exam.

An AP Spanish Language course is comparable to an advanced level (5th- and 6th- semester or the equivalent) college Spanish language course. Emphasizing the use of Spanish for active communication, it encompasses aural/oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and composition.

The course objectives are to help you:
• Comprehend formal and informal spoken Spanish
• Acquire vocabulary and a grasp of structure to allow the easy, accurate reading of newspaper and magazine articles, as well as of modern literature in Spanish
• Compose expository passages
• Express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency

The course seeks to develop language skills that are useful in themselves and that can be applied to various activities and disciplines, rather than to the mastery of any specific- subject matter. Finally, students will receive extensive training in the organization and writing of compositions as an integral part of this AP course.

About the AP Spanish Language Exam

The exam, which lasts about three hours, includes multiple-choice and free-response sections. During the multiple-choice section, students will demonstrate their listening and reading skills. The free-response section puts writing and speaking to the test. Except for directions, the entire exam is in Spanish. All the directions printed inside the exam books are in both English and Spanish.

Students must remember to respond only in Spanish. You may not use dictionaries or other reference works during the exam. Since recording equipment is used during the test, students will need to make sure they're familiar with the equipment before the test date. Trial runs of the equipment and procedures used during the test will be practiced.
