HAPPY NEW YEAR and Welcome back!

MATH
1. As a "getting back to school" math activity we looked at Tangrams today and read the story Grandfather Tang's Story.
A Tangram Worksheet went home along with a set of Tangrams (in a baggie). Please trace your solutions on a piece of paper.
Do not spend more than 10-15 minutes on this.

2. We also looked at a "word-number" problem where different values where substituted for letters. The example we did in class was
boys + boys = silly (We "stacked" the words which doesn't seem to work on this site).

We figured out that the "s" in "silly" had to be a "1" and worked backwards from there to get to y=2, l=4, o=7, b=6 and i=3

Tonight's problem is
girls + girls = silly

(Try to figure out what numbers could replace the letters)

HINT: We know that "i" can either be 0 or 9 and "l" can be either 0 or 9 (but they both can't be 0 or they both can't be 9).
Play around with the numbers and see what you get. Don't spend more than 10 minutes on this.

** ALL students were reminded to bring back their Math texts to school as we will be picking up our program from where we left off before Christmas.

CONTEST: "Name the Retreat Centre" Interested students were shown the contest details today and they can start researching and writing up a one page explanation describing what saint they chose and why it is a suitable choice.

Grade 4 Homework
October 7, 2009
Math: Teach a parent how to round the 7657 to the nearest thousand, the nearest hundred and the nearest ten.

Remember to write your "lesson" in your big yellow math book or a piece of paper as proof.

Remember how we wrote down the closest thousand, hundred or ten on either side of the number (see example below) to see our two possible answers....and then how we used the "neighbour" to help us decide...

Example Round 4376 to the nearest thousand
Step One: Write down the number 4376
Step Two: below that number, write down the closest thousand that is below the number or before it on the number line....
4376
4000

Step Three: above that number, write down the closest thousand that is above the number or after it on the number line....
5000
4376
4000

Step four: use the "neighbour" to the right of the thousands to "tell" you what to do...either round up to 5000 or round down to 4000 (as these are our only two choices) Since the "neighbour" is "3" I need to round the number 4376 down to 4000 because 4376 is closer to 4000 than 5000
Answer: 4376 rounded to the nearest thousand is 4000
