March certainly came in like a LION!! The children had fun making masks and paper plate Lion and Lamb faces to welcome in the new month. Our first week of “Bugs and Crawly Creatures” went very well. In class we spoke about the different ways that bugs (insects) get around. They can fly, crawl or hop. We also read two of Eric Carle’s delightful books; “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “ The Very Busy Spider” in circle time. We re-read the “Hungry Caterpillar” using felt board pieces that the children were able to place on the board as the book was read out loud. They love to be able to help tell the story and it was a good listening drill for the children. On Friday we made some cute and very busy spiders that are now hanging out in the hall on a super size web. We’ll likely add more buggy friends to the hall during this week’s lessons.
Letter ”I” was an “interesting” letter. Some letters are proving to be more challenging to make exciting for the class and “I” was one of them but overall I think that the week went well. The children are showing me that they can intake the information that is being offered to them and then show me they can recall it at a later time. I am overwhelmed that many of the little ones are doing such a great job with object and picture identification. Show and Tell was a great success: The AM class rocks!!! Another 100% showing. We had some fun objects sent in: iguana, igloo, ice cubes (yes, ice cubes!!!) and an ice cream scoop to mention a few.
As for this week, we’ll continue to talk about insects and crawling bugs. Ladybug, butterflies and honeybees will all make an appearance in the room. We’ll work a bit with counting, sorting and A-B patterns using bugs, of course.
Our Letter of the Week is “J”!!! Our target vocabulary words are: jacket, Jack-in-the-box, juice and jellybeans. When talking with your child during the week try and use these words, if you can. I know it may be difficult to carry on a conversation about a Jack-in-the-box, but give it a try. It is all about getting your child able to react verbally within his or her environment. The more ability to generalize that we can give them the better speakers and conversationalists they will become.
