Week in Review: Arctic Animals and the Letter
updated January 26, 2008
A fun week was had by all! The children loved learning about brown bears and polar bears. We read several books and looked at some great pictures of bears in their natural habitats. On Thursday, we went on a "Bear Hunt" in the classroom: we slogged through a swamp, tromped over a bridge, climbed up and down a tree and then the brave explored a dark bear cave to see who they could find inside. The children followed bear tracks through the room from one obstacle to the next. At the conclusion each child was able to discover the bear that we'd been hunting for!! We sent home the words for the hunt and some tracks for you to use, perhaps on a rainy day. The children all enjoyed this adventure.
This week we also worked on the Letter "C" and I am so pleased with the way the children are picking up the concepts that are being presented. We are not only working to get the children to speak more but we are offering them the opportunity to learn American Sign Language for each letter. Most are able to pick it up, even if in the form of a rough approximation by the end of the week. We talked about caves and cubs, crayons and cats, cookies and cakes. Show and tell was fun for both classes: Again we had a great variety of objects brought in by the little ones. We had a cow flashlight, a camera, a police car, a cupcake and a computer. For snack we had yummy chocolate cake in the shape of the letter "C". Before we ate the children help cover the cake with colored sprinkles. The week was GREAT!!!!!
