Week of December 10 - 14
updated December 8, 2007
What a fun week we had!! The children worked very hard to complete several projects. We read some of our December themed books. We began the week with the letter “A” and worked all the way to “G” on Friday when we finished our Gingerbread people. This is one of my favorite activities; it is fun and is very tactile for the children. Using medium grit sandpaper we cut out a large gingerbread person. We then prepared a very fragrant mixture of brown paint, powered cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. The children painted the sandpaper with the paint and when it was dry they were able to add fun buttons and a candy cane for him to hold! They smell great and the scent will last through the month!! Our angels, elves and pinecone trees came out better that I had expected. Our hallway is now decorated with the candy canes that we made and we’ll soon be adding our gingerbread people.
Thanks to all of our parents who have offered to come in and read to the children during the month. We have had a very good response. I am also very happy to say that several members of the Landstown Elementary family have offered to come by and share a book with us during circle time. This is a wonderful way to keep books and emergent literacy in the forefront of the ECSE program and involve our families. I think it would be safe to say that a tradition has been started in Room 8.
This week is going to be a very exciting one! We will begin our week with the letter “H” and conclude with “O.” Monday we will be talking about Hanukkah and we will make a menorah for the classroom. Later in the week, we will make icicles for our cubbies and the hallway, make a Kwanzaa placemat and make a cute ornament that we will be able to take home on Friday. Please use the target vocabulary with your child whenever possible. It is listed here on the webpage and also on the “Class News” send home sheet.
As always, I thank you for your support of the program and all of the help that you give to me. I am looking forward to the next two weeks and working with the children before we take our Winter break . We are going to have fun and as always, learn a lot. Please remember that we are planning to have a holiday celebration on Friday December 21st. The AM classes’ celebration will begin at 10:00 and the PM’s gathering will start at 1:00. If you would like to come by for our party or send something in, please let me know.
