As we make our way across our country during this 4th grade year, we are now settling into the West.

The students are required to know the following information during this unit:
How climates and landforms of the West make this region unique?.
How do resources and people of the West make the region unique?
How is the West a region of many contrasts?
Why Hawaii and Alaska become states?
Effects of the discovery of gold in California?
Definition of the Continental Divide and the Rain Shadow.
Features of Seattle and Salt Lake City.
Tlingit culture.
Products, minerals, and industries of the West.
Mountain Ranges of the West.

As with all of the regions we've studied thus far, the following key points are also required for essential knowledge of the West:
A region has common characteristics and is different from other regions.
Different climates, landforms, and cultures exist within a region.
