The Rest of the Story....Days 2-4 of TPS Workshop
updated July 9, 2009
On Tuesday, June 23, the teachers met at the William Lindsey White Library computer lab on the Emporia State University campus. While in the lab Sandra Hart demonstrated how to navigate the Library of Congress website, how to make an Image/Resource Table for their assigned lesson plans, and how to use the lesson plan template. The rest of the day the teachers were given time to familiarize themselves with the Library of Congress website and to look for primary sources for their lesson plans. The teachers met back in the WLW Library on Wednesday, June 24. Darla led the teachers in a discussion on the instructional cycle for using primary sources (focus, inquiry, application, and assessment) and examples of strategies that could be used for each phase. Sandra also showed the teachers how to create power point slides for the “Zoom-In” activity teachers can use as a focus activity for a primary source lesson as well as other websites like Filamentality and Museum in a Box that the teachers could use as resources for their lesson plans. The teachers were given the rest of the morning and part of the afternoon to work on their lesson plans. Wednesday’s workshop session concluded with a presentation by Robin Black and Donna Reynolds from the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum about the Five Star Leaders program. “Five Star Leaders is an experiential-learning leadership program which challenges students in grades 8-12, college students and adults to work together to solve a problem, confront a crisis, or accomplish a mission. Armed with original documents and knowledge of history and leadership, students take on the same challenges as those experienced by historical figures. Teachers and students complete four classroom modules to prepare for a half-day experience at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kansas. On site, students assume the roles of historical characters and work with original documents while immersed in an historic event.” (from Eisenhower Library website) Robin and Donna shared that the Eisenhower Foundation has grants available to help cover the cost of the program ($5 per student) as well as for transportation to the Eisenhower Library. The Teaching with Primary Sources workshop concluded on Thursday, June 24. The teachers spent Thursday morning finishing their lesson plans and preparing their presentations for the afternoon session. After lunch, the teachers shared their primary source lesson plans by showing the primary sources they were going to use and explaining their focus activity, inquiry activity(ies), and assessments. Some of the teachers also shared handouts they created to accompany their lessons. To provide a copy of all of the lesson plans created during the work shop, each teacher was given a jump drive on which Sandra had loaded everyone’s lesson plans and supplemental materials. (Those materials are also available on this website along with other resource materials provided during the workshop.)
