The study of history provides an unparalleled framework for understanding modern society. But understanding present-day society is not the only reason to study the past. History presents us with the record not only of human achievement but also of human failure, cruelty, and barbarism. An understanding of history is the basis for understanding the human condition and grappling with moral issues.
