The research shows that people who read have a better chance at academic success! To encourage reading, students are now assigned independent reading assignments throughout the year. Students, you are to complete the following assignment as you read your independent novel. Make sure your final product is neat and creative!
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! Use the following requirements to design a newspaper about your independent reading novel. Place the articles and features where you think they best fit (use a real newspaper for guidance). Your assignment should resemble a real newspaper.
1) Title-create a title for your newspaper. It should be related to the novel.
2) Feature article-this article needs to be a factual article about a major event from the book. Make sure this article does not contain opinions.
3) Advice column-This needs to be a letter to a newspaper advice columnist seeking advice about a major problem the main character faces in the story. Create a disguised name for your character to use to sign his or her letter. Then write a response from the columnist that suggests how the problem could be solved.
4) Editorial-Choose an issue related to your novel and take a position on it. Write a letter to the editor describing how that character feels about the issue. Remember to create a headline for it.
5) Comic Strip-The comic strip should focus around an element of plot in the story. It should be complete with comic-style illustrations and dialogue bubbles.
6) Extras-All of the space in your newspaper must be filled. After you have written all that is required, be creative with the remaining space. You may include: want ads, advertisements, obituaries, etc. Make sure they relate to your novel.
This assignment requires you to use your time wisely. Don't wait until the last minute! Try to complete some of the responses as you are reading so you don't have to do all of the writing at the end.
