Welcome to the Blackrock Library Media Center!

In September, we are learning routines, expectations and book care and will soon begin lessons in computer technology and information literacy. And, we'll have lots of great books to share.

Students in grades 1 - 5 have Library Media once each week with Ms. Hines. In addition, Ms. Anderson is here on alternate Wednesdays to provide library media services to support classroom learning.

We will learn how to find books we enjoy in the library and how to take good care of the books we borrow. We'll enjoy reading folk tales from around the world and will write our own Blackrock folk tale using computer technologies to animate and record our story.

We will be practicing the skills we need to find interesting books in the library. Then, we'll read both fiction and non-fiction with historical perspectives. We'll read biographies in books, and then we'll learn to use online databases to find, read, and listen to more biographies. We'll also enjoy a series of Tall Tales and use computer software to write and animate our own Tall Tales.

We will be learning how to use online library catalogs to find books we can love. We'll practice different search techniques that we can then apply to online databases as well. We'll also work with both print and online atlases and maps, and compare them. And, we'll read a lot of really good books!

We will be learning about fiction genres and will use computer software to track and graph our favorites. We will use almanacs to learn about non-fiction text features. We'll compare print and online databases for dictionary and encyclopedia questions. We'll complete research projects using all the tools available in the Blackrock library and the virtual library.

5th Graders will be learning about Internet safety and web site evaluation. We will work with online databases and tools to locate information that answers our research questions. We will compare online and print research tools and learn about copyright and fair use of text and images we find on the Internet. We'll also use computers to blog about the books we read and create animated book trailers.
