This course focuses on the use of Latin word roots to improve word understanding and develop vocabulary based on meaning and an understanding of the historical context in which words develop. Students place words in different “root families” to understand relationships between English and Latin vocabulary. Students are introduced to Latin grammar and sentence structure as a tool to strengthen their writing and editing skills. Latin words are taught in the context of many fields including religion, education, literature, and law to emphasize word meaning. When possible, common Latin word roots are also explored in Spanish I class.

This course extends knowledge of roots, prefixes, and suffixes and how words relate to each other based on their root families. Students continue to learn aspects of Latin grammar to improve writing ability and enhance reading comprehension. An understanding of the origin of words and the history of word usage is also examined and connections are made across the curriculum to put word usage and development in historical context. When possible, common Latin word roots are also explored in Spanish II class.

Learning Lab provides individualized small group instruction in a variety of academic areas including math, reading, writing, spelling, and study skills. Students who receive Learning Lab services work on a variety of learning strategies that improve learning across the academic disciplines.

Our class will figure out the meaning of numbers through exploration, activities, and questioning!
