Today we introduced adverbs and reviewed the focus strategy. Then we began work on descriptive writing techniques: simile, metaphor, and personification. This was review for many students.

Today we corrected the spelling definitions and sentences. Students were introduced to the Turkey Farm optional project and began cutting out their turkeys. Those who didn't get a chance to do it will be able to do it on Friday. Otherwise, students worked on their Reading Workshop Projects.

Today we reviewed for the Quiz tomorrow on Action, Helping, and Linking Verbs. I attached some notes that you can review tonight for the quiz. We also worked on Spelling / Vocabulary Unit 9 and turned in final drafts of the Scary Story.
Homework: Spelling / Vocabulary 10 definitions (words you don't know or think are difficult) and 10 sentences using the same words you chose for the definitions. Study for tomorrow's quiz!

Note: Students who would like to ask questions and/or get extra help before the quiz tomorrow, you can email me tonight and I'll allow you entrance into the building tomorrow morning at 7AM for help.

Today we corrected the spelling / vocab unit 8 worksheet and sentences, which was handed in for points. Students then finished revising their partner's scary story (only step 6 for most students). Students were then given the opportunity to read their novel for the rest of the hour.

Today we worked on Entry #18. I reviewed the focus strategy for this week's RW Letters (Visualization and Higher Level Thinking Questions again). We then worked on writing our climax paragraphs for their scary stories. We looked at examples of what it means to slow down the climax of your story so it's more fun to read.

Today we worked on Entry #17 and practiced "showing" in our first paragraph for the scary story instead of "telling".

Note: The first paragraph of the scary story should be written first as "telling" and then as "showing". The second and third paragraphs (rising action) should be "telling", so we can fix them later next week.

Students were also given time to work on their storyboard and their Reading Workshop Letter.

Today we reviewed linking verbs and practiced visualization. Students read a short story (Blugee) to practice visualizing. Then they determined where their mental pictures began and ended while reading. Lastly, they drew the first 4 pictures (detailed) they visualized while reading.

Today we completed some sentences to let me know who you are and what you like to do. We finished discussing the class rules. We also talked about and practiced how to test a book to see if it is in your reading level and if it interests you. At the end of the hour we worked on team building outside.
