Port of Entry ESL - Listening/Speaking
The Port of Entry (POE) ESL Listening/Speaking is required for non-English speaking students who have no proficiency in English or a low level of English proficiency. This course serves as the introductory course in the three level sequence of ESL courses. The emphasis of the course is the development of aural/oral language skills in order to use English to communicate for a variety of real purposes and audiences. Port of Entry ESL - Reading /Writing This course is the companion course for POE ESL Listening/Speaking. It is designed to assist POE students in developing their knowledge of both reading and writing English language skills. To be activated in case of an emergency only.
Intermediate ESL
Prerequisite: Successful completion of POE ESL. The Intermediate ESL course is designed to meet the needs of non-native speakers of English who already have some level of cognitive academic language proficiency in English. To be activated in case of an emergency only
Advanced ESL
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Intermediate ESL This course uses a literature based approach. It encourages the students to use acquired reading and writing strategies in all content areas. A variety of texts and materials are used. 07/27
Dear students: The folowing is your homework for next week. 1) Complete book report 2) Please send me two additional events for your American history timeline. 3) Your folders should reflect your own personal timeline --- completed. 4) Complete the math readin comprehension open ended questions. on a separate sheet of paper. Write in complete sentences and legibly. 5) Answer the question posted on the message board. 6) Read the hand-outs given to you about the science stdy skills. Highlight what you don't understand and bring to class. 7) Please be on time!!!!! Ms. Bahl _____________________________________________ 07/20 Dear Students: You did it! You have survived the first 2 weeks of the Summer Workshop:). Yadira and Momina, well done on our class quiz about continents and oceans!! Noor and Naila---excellent effort!!! Now let's get down to business: The following are your assignments for next week: 1) Those of you who have not turned in your books reports from last week, must turn in two next Wednesday. 2) We will begin next week with a math facts quiz based on what was discussed in our first week's class. Please review notes as well as handouts on the word problems and vocabulary. The quiz will include a reading comprehension passage followed by MCQ's and open-ended questions. 3) Review the hand-out on study tips for social studies as well as the continents and ocean bodies. 4) Complete the US history timeline that was given to you in class. Your timeline should begin in 2006 and end in July 2011. You may google the information or research it online. The timeline must follow the same format as the one in the handout. You will use separate sheets of paper. Each year must have ALL the relevant historic information (include as many as needed. One or two will NOT be accepted). 5) Create a personal timeline on your folders beginning from the year you arrived in the United States to the present. Include AT LEAST (you can have more) 2 major events that have impacted your life. Make your timeline neat and colorful. 6) Please respond to the question posted on the message board in a timely manner. 7) Keep the communication coming. All questions are welcome. I am extremely proud of all your accomplishments and efforts and look forward to another exciting school year starting September. I am also very happy to be offering an ESL Summer Workshop, designed to provide you with continued support and opportunities to practice conversation (listening/speaking) skills in various social settings. We will meet on Wednesdays, starting July 14th for 5 weeks from 7:30am -3:00pm in Rm 110. Please bring water and snacks as short breaks will be provided. |
