Happy Winter, Blackrock Readers! We hope everyone was able to enjoy some great reading over school vacation. In honor of Valentine’s Day, check out this website that has list of children’s books for Valentine’s Day (http://www.apples4theteacher.com/holidays/valentines-day/kids-books)
We welcome Mrs. Abraham to the Reading Room. Mrs. Abraham is here subbing for Mrs. Sansone. She is a retired Coventry Reading specialist who brings us vast experience and is already very familiar with our students and routine. All students, K-5, will be screened in reading as part of our S.W.A.T assessments that occur three times per year. Students are screened on word identification skills, oral reading fluency, and comprehension. Younger students will be screened on grade level curriculum words and their ability to name letters and their corresponding sounds. This information will help us determine which students need extra support in any area. Contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Please continue to support your child’s reading development by encouraging their attempts and setting time aside for reading and/or practicing word lists. Repetition and review are crucial and will benefit your child. Don’t forget that the Coventry Public Library has wonderful children’s programs and fantastic books. Looking for great Holiday stories to read to and with your children? Check out www.childrensbooks.about.com for a great list of titles. Another great site is www.readkiddoread.com which has titles for children from birth to ages 10+. Let us know if you find some great title or authors! Great Website http://www.spaghettibookclub.org/ Book reviews by kids for kids Having trouble finding the "just right" book for you? Use the "5 Finger Rule". 1. Go to a page in the middle of the book. 2. Begin reading the page. Hold up 1 finger each time you come to a word you don't know. 3. Use the following scale: 1 finger = book is good for you 2 fingers = book should still be okay 3 fingers = book may be a little challenging 4 fingers = book is probably too difficult 5 fingers = choose another book to read!
