WELCOME TO AIR FORCE JROTC. The mission of AFJROTC is to build citizens of character for America. To meet this goal, each year the curriculum and Cadet Corps� extracurricular activities focus on a mix of aeronautics and leadership in combination with school and community service. Academic themes of study centered on aeronautics and space include the science and history of aviation, astronomy and spaceflight, world and cultural studies, survival skills, and military policy and organization. Leadership aspects include Cadet Corps management, drill and uniform wear, military customs, individual and organizational communications skills, career choices, physical fitness and healthy lifestyle. Uniforms are provided at no cost to each student. Voluntary involvement in numerous Cadet Corps functions and school and community extracurricular service activities conducted under AFJROTC auspices provide a memorable way to enhance enrollment in the program. Students enrolled in AFJROTC are NOT required to enlist in the military following graduation but may accrue enlistment benefits and receive college credit should they so choose. The class is broken down into three elements that are taught each week as follows: 1) A Journey into Aviation History (2 days per week): The emphasis of this course is on civilian and military contributions to aviation; the development, modernization, and transformation of the Air Force; and a brief astronomical and space exploration history. It is interspersed with concise overviews of the principles of flight to include basic aeronautics, aircraft motion and control, flight power, and rockets. Overall outcomes for the courses are to: - know the historical facts and impacts of the early attempts to fly - know the major historical contributors to the development of flight - know the contributions of the U.S. Air Force to modern aviation history - know the key events of space exploration history 2) LEADERSHIP (2 days per week): Student focus is on citizenship, character, and Air Force tradition. Topics of study includes communication and management skills, leadership, customs and courtesies and responsibilities of citizenship. Overall outcomes for the courses are to develop: - patriotism and an understanding of their personal obligation to the US. - habits of orderliness and precision - a high degree of personal honor, self reliance and leadership - a knowledge of basic Air Force structure and traditions - an awareness of the community needs and potential solutions in meeting those needs 3) PHYSICAL FITNESS (1 day per week): The student will learn the importance of teamwork as well as physical fitness as a lifestyle. Our CCR program is intended to give our students the guidance they need to be prepared for college or a career path after they graduate from Woodbury High School. Our program addresses the differing needs of students in each grade as they move towards their post high school life. Once a month throughout the school year, WHS will run an advisory schedule so that all WHS students can participate in our College & Career Readiness (CCR) Advisory. This program was designed specifically for Woodbury High School by Woodbury High School staff. This is a new program for the 2011-12 school year. Information will be posted as it becomes available. The class is broken down into three elements that are taught each week as follows:    1) SCIENCE OF FLIGHT (2 days per week):  The course will acquaint the student with the aerospace environment, the human requirements of flight, principles of aircraft flight, and principles of navigation. We will discuss the atmosphere and weather. Also we will develop an understanding of the flight environment that includes the forces of lift, drag, thrust, and weight. We will discuss the Human Requirements of Flight and analyze the human circulatory system, the effects of acceleration and deceleration, and protective equipment. Students also learn basic navigation including map reading, course plotting, and the effects of wind.    2) LEADERSHIP (2 days per week): Student focus is on Communication, Awareness, and Leadership.  The leadership aspect of this class will focus on communicating effectively, understanding groups and teams, preparing for leadership, solving conflicts and problems, and personal development.     3) PHYSICAL FITNESS (1 day per week): The student will learn the importance of teamwork as well as physical fitness as a lifestyle. Calisthenics and a team sport/activity is played. Physical fitness clothes are provided at no cost to students (except shoes).
