Algebra 2
This course is for students who have completed Geometry, and have been recommended by their Geometry teacher. As an Algebra II student, you should take responsibility for your math education by making good choices during class time (listening, participating, and taking notes), doing your entire assignment every night, re-doing missed homework problems until you can do them error-free, getting and staying organized, coming in for extra help, when necessary, and preparing for tests by practicing problems from the chapter.

The textbook will be Glencoe’s Algebra II. First quarter we will study chapters 1-3, second quarter we will cover chapters 4-6, third quarter we will complete chapters 7-9, and fourth quarter we will study chapters 10, 11, part of 12, and 13.

If you are absent, it is imperative that you see me the following day in order to catch up on what was presented during your absence.

REQUIRED MATERIALS AND GUIDELINES

1. You need to have a notebook with standard size loose-leaf notebook paper (NO SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS OR SPIRAL PAPER ALLOWED!). I will not accept assignments done on spiral notebook paper, even if the edge is torn off.

2. A graphing calculator is strongly recommended for this class. If you have a TI 83 Plus calculator, that is fine, but if you are purchasing a new calculator, I suggest a TI-84 because it will be more helpful to you in successive classes. You must bring a calculator to class every day.

3. You need to bring two pencils and a red pen to class every day. Homework must be done in pencil and labeled in the upper right hand corner with your name, period, section, and page number. You must use a red pen to grade homework, and all corrections must be done in red.

4. ALL WORK MUST BE SHOWN. Leave space for each problem not completed.

5. All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the day after they are assigned. The Eagle High School Late Work policy will apply to all homework.

6. Be prompt, prepared, polite, positive, productive, honest, and responsible for your own actions.

GRADES

Your grade will be based on your performance on tests, quizzes, projects, and homework. We are accountable to the universities, so our grades must reflect your ability and performance. Therefore, your grade cannot be inflated by extra credit reports, etc. There will, however, be an opportunity to earn extra credit points on exams.

You are expected to complete all assignments. There will be a chapter test given at the end of each chapter, and possibly one quiz given midway through each chapter. Grades will be determined by the percentage of points earned on tests (50%), quizzes (25%), homework (15%), and the semester final (10%). Points will be deducted from your homework grade for failing to bring materials to class, disruptive behavior and the unwillingness to participate in the reading, writing, discussing, doing, and presenting of mathematics in class. The grading scale will be:
A: 90-100%
B: 80-89%
C: 70-79%
D: 60-69%
F: Below 60%

Again, late work will be accepted in compliance with the LATE WORK POLICY of Eagle High School.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. Absolutely no food, candy, or drinks in the classroom!
2. Class disruptions will not be tolerated. You may not leave your seat without the teacher’s permission. This includes sharpening of pencils.
3. Refrain from talking unless called upon.
4. Do not move desks or write on walls, desks, posters, or the SmartBoard.
5. NO CELL PHONES or IPODS under any circumstances!
6. Respect your fellow students and adhere to the basic rules of etiquette so you do not infringe upon the rights of other students to learn.
7. We will adhere strictly to the Absence and Tardy Policy of Eagle High School

Math is the language of the universe, and my hope is that you will come to love and appreciate it as much as I do.

Algebra 2 Skills Lab
This course is for students who have successfully completed Geometry, are enrolled in Algebra II, and have been recommended to take the math lab by their Geometry teacher. Our goal will be to enhance your Algebra II experience by giving you adequate time for review, reinforcement, and further explanation of the lessons you learn in your regular Algebra II class. As an Algebra II student, you should take responsibility for your math education by making good choices during class time (listening, participating, and taking notes), doing your entire assignment every night, re-doing missed homework problems until you can do them error-free, getting and staying organized, going in for extra help, when necessary, and preparing for tests by practicing problems from the chapter. In this lab class we will clarify any misunderstandings, further review the lessons taught in the regular class, and assist you in preparing for class evaluations. We will also spend time delving into related subjects on which the regular teacher does not have time to dwell. Periodically we will do class projects which relate to the lessons being studied.

The textbook will be Glencoe’s Algebra II. First quarter we will study chapters 1-3, second quarter we will cover chapters 4-6, third quarter we will complete chapters 7-9, and fourth quarter we will study chapters 10, 11, part of 12, and 13.

6. Be prompt, prepared, polite, positive, productive, honest, and responsible for your own actions.

GRADES

Your grade will be based on your performance, attitude and behavior, commitment to learning the material, and whether you contribute positively to the class experience. We are accountable to the universities, so our grades must reflect your ability and performance. Therefore, your grade cannot be inflated by extra credit reports, etc. There will, however, be an occasional opportunity to earn extra credit points.

You are expected to complete all assignments from your regular Algebra II class. Four points will be awarded each day. These points will be based on:

1. Bringing your textbook, notebook paper, and a pencil to class daily so that you are prepared to work on your Algebra II assignments
2. Completing the work assigned in your Algebra II class and showing all work
3. Having a positive attitude and contributing to the class mission by participating in class discussions and group projects, helping other students gain understanding, and not disrupting other students
4. Attending class and being on time

Semester grades will be determined by a combination of daily points (80%) and points on group projects (20%). Group projects will be based on special activities we do or extra topics we cover in class.

Grades will be based on the following percentage scales:
90 and above------A
80-89-------------B
70-79-------------C
60-69-------------D
Below 60----------F

Again, any late work will be accepted in compliance with the LATE WORK POLICY of Eagle High School.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. Absolutely no food, candy, or drinks in the classroom!
2. Class disruptions will not be tolerated. You may not leave your seat without the teacher’s permission. This includes sharpening of pencils.

Honors Algebra 2
This course is for students who have completed Honors Geometry with an A or high B, and have been recommended by their Honors Geometry teacher. The definition of an Honors Class is a course that follows the district curriculum but proceeds at an accelerated instructional pace and calls the students to a higher level of responsibility and a higher level or thinking. An Honors course requires an increased time commitment to homework and study. No curriculum modifications will be made to slow the pace or limit the level of instruction in the course.

As an Honors Algebra II student, you should take responsibility for your math education by making good choices during class time (listening, participating, and taking notes), doing your entire assignment every night, re-doing missed homework problems until you can do them error-free, getting and staying organized, coming in for extra help, when necessary, and preparing for tests by practicing problems from the chapter.

In comparison to the regular Algebra II class, we will master more material at a higher level of thinking and application. Re-tests are not given, and the only extra credit available is from the completion of higher level thinking problems on homework, quizzes, and tests.

The textbook will be Glencoe’s Algebra II.

If you are absent, it is imperative that you see me the following day in order to catch up on what was presented during your absence.
