Gratz Brown Elementary believes in differentiating instruction based on student needs. To help further our ability to support students in mastering curricular objectives, we have built in a 30 minute block of time into our schedule when all faculty members will be working with a group of students with similar needs. During this 30 minute block, we will be focusing on math instruction. To group students initially, all students took the end of the year math test from the previous grade to help us identify any learning gaps. For example, third graders took the end of the year math test from second grade. Based on the results, students were then grouped into flexible groups focusing on greater than/less than, fact families, place value, number lines, word problems, least to greatest, and enrichment. The goal of the groups is to help students master the skills needed coming into this school year so that they can move forward successfully within the grade level curriculum. Students will move in and out of groups based on their needs as shown on NWEA testing and classroom assessments. Your child may be working with a classroom teacher, a specialist such as the PE teacher, an administrator, or an interventionist. All of us are working together as a team to help our students move forward in mathematics, and for those already meeting expectations to challenge the students to advance their skills. As a school district, we are committed to seeing improvements in student achievement in the area of mathematics. Please join us in this commitment and talk with your student about what he or she is learning.
