10th Literature - 4th Period
May 7, 2013 --As you are all aware, we will be finishing out the semester with The Old Man and the Sea and practicing writing persuasive essays for your Georgia High School Writing Test next fall.

 

Remember: your essay for Julius Caesar is due at the end of class on Wednesday, April 17.

March 11- unit 1 of roots rap song on roots, prefixes, & suffixes

March 8-- We have finished Act I--make sure you understand it! We had our first vocabulary quiz on tone words. Remember tone can make all the difference!

This unit lasted longer than anticipated--we have, of course, also begun our drama unit: The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. --make sure you are studying your drama terms and reviewing your backgound information.

Persuasive unit--January 17----(approx. 3 weeks)--Think logos, pathos, ethos, kairosYou have now turned in all of the following:

Persuasive essay with specific supporting details provided, and you annotated your use of persuasive strategies, techniques, and any logical fallacies.

You have had a unit test: If you need to do test corrections other than the the FULL class provided on Friday, 2/22, come in before school or stay after on Tuesday or Thursday.

February 4-8-

  • redo on advertisement analysis
  • read and outline an essay
  • Wed. & Thurs.-- write a persuasive essay based on information provided to you and some grammar review
January (rest of the month)

We have analyzed persuasive essays and reviewed our persuasive techniques, strategies, and logical fallacies

  • reading/answering persuasive essay information

  • outline for persuasive essay writing (remember it is only 1 of several ways)

  • assignment: find an advertisement & write what strategies & techniques are used

Wednesday, 16th--I will be at the quarterly ESL update meeting. You will be reading a nonfiction text on water. Be sure to think about the persuasive aspect of the text. Also, make flashcards for the persuasive fallacies to be aware of in the world around you, and for you to use with your own persuasive work.

Tuesday, 15th--Reviewed the quiz. Reviewed & rewrote similes, symbols, and personification. Discussed writing on the topic, a topic sentence for this topic, and evidence. Remeber you have the opportunity to rewrite the paragraph on the topic of the family, not the house. Powerpoint/notes on persuasive strategies (see PPT link under resources).

January 14 -Monday was a powerpoint reviewing the purposes of the writing genres. Then, students read an informative text and responded to questions on persuasive essay writing.

 

January 7 - 11-We will be reading "There Will Come Soft Rains" --be sure you know those terms that are on the handout.

9th Literature
Big news-- EOCT dates will be May 13th and 14th--a Monday and Tuesday--be sure to prepare yourselves. Practice on USA TESTprep.com whenever you are able.


After spring break-- we will continue to learn new elements and start the reviewing process for the end of the school year. We will be working with poetry and persuasion while going back over the standards we have already learned.

March 18- Spring break-- we will be working on all aspects of writing: the writing process, outlines, essay formats, transitions, text structure & signal words, and vocabulary.

March 8- tone vocabulary quiz today & we are almost finished with The Odyssey. We will finish reading it on March 11--then on the 12, you will review and the Odyssey TEST will be Wednesday, March 13!

February 25, 2013 - Part 2 of The Odyssey--Odysues' arrival back home in Ithaca.

You have a new list of vocabulary words--be sure to study them and keep reviewing your other lists (2). Vocabulary quiz Friday

Always review what we have read in class of The Odyssey. We just finished the first section of Odysseus' arrival back to Ithaca.

Review:  an epic, an epic hero, an epic or Homeric simile--look at your notes and pages 1041 and 1087 in the text book.

 

You have a test tomorrow on the journey--part I of the Odyssey - pages 1043 - 1083-- STUDY- review your question packets!!--other review sites from other teachers go to resources

Feb. 5th - reviewed epics, guile, verse, stanza, poetry, prose, and wrote a paragraph about Odysseus

Feb. 4-- finish reading the "Cyclops" --2 stanzas of verse--be ready for a quiz and have the packet complete

Feb. 1 -- read more of the "Cyclops"-- answer the questions in the packet through 25 and the first 3 pages of vocabulary.

Practice your figurative language game


 "Science of Persuasion" --this youtube video about theis for those of you who want the extra information. It will take some effort to listen to because it is done by professors, but I recommend it wholeheartedly! Their persuasive principles seem very accurate, and the graphics/images are very effective.
