Conduct Card and Grading Information
CONDUCT CARD INFORMATION

Conduct cards, the school newsletter (Armadillo Trails), and graded classwork will go home each Friday in a brown envelope with your child's name on it. Please review the information, sign the conduct card, and return it inside the brown envelope the following Monday.

We check for the conduct cards and envelopes on Monday. Your child could earn a consequence if it is returned late and possibly receive an N for not being Prepared for Class. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. Thank you!

Also, our library day is Tuesday. Your child should return his/her books on or before that morning. If your child does not have his/her library book on library day, it will result in a mark for not being prepared for class.

The longer I write and read, the more I learn; writing and reading are lifelong apprenticeships... --Donald M. Murray

Language arts will be taught through reading and writing workshop. Students are actively engaged in reading and writing. It's designed to build on each student's strengths and meet his/her needs. I use mini-lessons, a short focused lesson on something most of the readers/writers need help learning, and a balanced literacy program to teach students to become lifelong, independent, and strategic readers and writers. My goal for your child is to love reading and writing!

During reading workshop a literacy management program called, The Daily 5, developed by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, will be used. Daily 5 is about helping students develop independent literacy habits while the teacher works with students.

Daily 5 includes students choosing:
  • Read to Self (everyday)
  • Work on Writing (everyday)
  • Word Work (Spelling)
  • Listen to Reading
  • Read to Someone
When students choose their literacy task it becomes more motivating.
Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul.--Joyce Carol Oates

The spelling program used is Words Their Way. This is a great program that allows teachers to group students into different spelling groups based on their developmental levels, and it provides students an opportunity to manipulate words in a fun way.

Students will be given a spelling inventory the first or second week of school and word lists will be compiled based on their developmental level.

Every Monday, your child will bring home a list of weekly spelling words. The words have been introduced to the children in class. These words are individualized to meet the specific needs and developmental level of your child. His/her list reflects spelling patterns that your child may be using, but confusing. The goal is to have your child apply these spelling patterns to spell and read future unknown words.

The students will be practicing their spelling words everyday during Daily 5. They are also expected to practice their words at home. They should do a sorting activity explained below, make the words with magnetic letters, or for computer fun…check out the spelling practice available under student websites. The spelling test will be on Friday.

SPELLING SORTS

Closed/Writing Sort
Lay down the guide words (bold words). These are used to sort the rest of the words. Mix up the remainder of the words. Your child chooses a word, says the word aloud and sorts the word into the correct column. (This is done in class with the teacher on Monday.) Write the words for practice into the correct column. Have your child explain how the words are sorted. Ask: What do the words have in common? What is different about the words?

Buddy Sort
Lay down the guide (bold) words. Then read the rest of the words aloud one at a time and have your child indicate where the word goes without seeing it. Place the card where they tell you and let your child move it into the correct column if necessary. Repeat if your child makes more than two errors.

Speed Sort
Lay the guide (bold) words down. Time your child while he/she sorts the rest of the words into the correct column as fast as he/she can. This speed feature helps children work toward automatic fluency with the feature under study. Try it a second or third time to see if your child can beat the time. They LOVE this in class!

ABC Sort
Have your child put the spelling words into alphabetical order. Check the order, help if necessary, and have them write the words down.

WORD WALL

Word wall words will consist of five new words each week that will be put up on our WORD WALL. These words will be practiced daily in a fun way. These words are placed in the room and are expected to be spelled correctly each time your child uses the word in his/her writing. Your child will be tested over these words using dictation. Word wall will not start until probably mid-September.

During writing workshop my goal for students is to have an authentic purpose for writing so that they feel a sense of ownership in their writing. I encourage them to choose topics that are interesting to them...possibly to share an important event in their life, to write about something that will get their friends to laugh, or to communicate a message that is important to them. I like for kids to write about what they know and what they care about. Letting students choose their own topics helps them be more engaged and receptive to the mini-lessons being taught. I want students to love writing!

I consider it an honor to have your child in my class this year! I am very excited and ready to watch your child grow and learn! Math will be taught using a whole group, small groups, partners, manipulatives and technology.

Most of our concepts are taught through problem solving. We will use a 4-step process when solving addition and subtraction problems to help the students to think carefully about how they are solving their problems. I know that working together, we can enable your child to become a successful, independent problem solver!

Math Homework is due on Friday and we will check it in class together. Your child should continue to practice Math Facts at home on a weekly basis (sums up to 18.) Students can refer to the websites listed for added help with practicing their facts (online.) We will have four Math Benchmark Tests this year with several checkpoints and quizzes throughout the six weeks to monitor your child's progress. Our Math Benchmark dates are: Oct. 15-16, Nov.20-21, Feb. 18-19 and May 27-28. (Updated after Ike!)

Science will be taught the first three weeks of each six weeks. We will have three Benchmark Tests in Science this year and a study guide will come home about a week before the test. The material will be covered completely during class and should be an easy review for your child to look over once it is sent home. Our Science Benchmark dates are: Dec.12, March 12 and May 21. (Updated after Ike!)

Social Studies will be taught the last three weeks of each six weeks. Progress reports will not reflect our Social Studies grades because of this schedule. We will have three Benchmark Tests in Social Studies this year and a study guide will come home with your child about a week before the test. Our Social Studies benchmark dates are: Dec. 2, March 9 and May 14. (Updated after Ike!)
