Due Date: November 20, 2009
Students will need to find a variety of Folktales during the month of November as assigned homework. Copy/print the story to bring to class and share. Here are some links that may help:

Heritage Homework (homework)
Due Date: November 18, 2009
Print and complete the attached download- family tree. Fill in as much information as you can find about your ancestors- include their name and where they were born. After learning as much as you can about your heritage, list your 2 strongest cultural ties in the notes box provided. You will choose a story from this culture/heritage to re-tell for our storytelling unit when you return from holiday break.

Folktale Creative Writing Assignment (homework)
Due Date: November 16, 2009
Reminder of Creative Writing Assignment given on Tuesday, Nov. 10:
Creative Writing Assignment: Write Your Own Animal Trickster Tale or Pourquoi Tale Due: Monday, 11/16.
Learn about the animal world by writing your own Trickster tale or a pourquoi tale after reading a series of tales and learning about the many elements they contain. Choose an animal for your story that arouses your curiosity, from alligators to yaks, and learn about the animal using the Internet. Next, start to write your original folktale using a story frame: Begin with "Long ago...," and end with "...and that's why (example: the whale has a spout!)". Limit it to one page written or ½ page typed.
Graded on:
A) Contains the elements of a Trickster or Pourquoi tale
B) Creative, original animal and tale
C) Conventions have been checked: spelling, punctuation, capitalizati
D) Assignment follows in-class and written directions.
***Rubric is on p.14 of notebook. Also included as a download.
*Warning: Please do not copy or plagiarize from another tale or assignment. You will receive no credit and will face academic dishonesty consequences.

Trickster and Porquoi Tales (homework)
Due Date: November 10, 2009
1. Students have been instructed in class to download this 2 page assignment and to print a copy of it.
2. Read the folktale for story #1: Brer Rabbit Falls Down the Well, then copy and paste the short story to a "Word Page". Then read story #2: Coyote and the Columbia and repeat instructions. Print out story 1 & 2 on 1 sheet of paper.
3. Fill in the chart that corresponds to the type of folktale.
4. Bring this information to class for Tuesday.
Note: Other stories are assigned for later- no need to work ahead!

Egyptian Culture Homework (homework)
Due Date: November 9, 2009
Assigned for homework on Thursday, Nov. 5.
We have studied many different Cinderella versions and are studying in depth the Egyptian version. Students are to explore the following links to decide is this version of Cinderella truly reflective of the culture in which the tale originates?

1. Students are to use the 3 links provided for Egyptian Culture and explore the sites learning facts and details from the resources.

2. Download the chart to copy and fill in with descriptive facts and details. Include MLA citations for at least 2 resource sites used.

Cinderella From Other Cultures (homework)
Due Date: November 5, 2009
Read one other version of Cinderella, print out to bring to class, and complete a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the story with the American Cinderella version. Discuss with your assigned class group on Wednesday so that everyone is doing a different version.
