In the 4th cycle 6A students will explore Traditional Literature (stories handed down through an oral tradition over generations) including Greek myths, legends, and fairy tales.
We will use individual stories and a novel, "The Book of Lost Things" to develop a deeper understanding of theme, elements of plot, and archetypes. In addition, we will be studying the "monomyth," better known as the "hero's journey," a plot structure that is used widely in movies, televisions, and popular fiction.
Students can look forward to a creative project over the hero's journey in "The Book of Lost Things" (due date is TBD) as well as a film study of the hero's journey.
Finally, I want to extend a big "thank-you" to www.donorschoose.org for hosting the grant proposal that allowed me to get a class set of novels to use in this unit. I would also like to acknowledge the 6A parents who visited www.donorschoose.org and made a donation-- it was my first time using the site and I was ecstatic and frankly shocked to have my grant proposal funded so quickly. It was so fast, I didn't even get a chance to email all the parents I have in my address book!
In any case, I am truly excited and inspired by this material and look forward to a fun, productive unit.
